It looks like San Diego State isn't shedding any tears at not having BYU in the Mountain West anymore.
Among the emails the Tulsa World obtained via a Freedom of Information request from Oklahoma athletic director Joe Castiglione is one from Jenny Bramer, ex-all-American high jumper for the Sooners and current San Diego State associate athletic athletic director. Most of Bramer's email touts the Aztecs as an ideal candidate for Big 12 expansion on behalf of San Diego State athletic director Jim Sterk, but the last sentence contains a throwaway jab BYU fans likely won't appreciate.
"Is there anything that Jim or I can be doing to share the message about all San Diego State's advantages? Or for that matter sharing all the disadvantages of being in the conference with BYU!"
Bramer likely knows Castiglione well and obviously did not mean for her email to become public, but that final sentence is nonetheless the conference realigment equivalent of negative recruiting.
The email was sent on Aug. 31, days after Texas A&M's departure to the SEC had become official and at the height of speculation that BYU was a likely candidate to replace the Aggies. Ultimately neither BYU nor San Diego State appear likely to join the Big 12 in the near future because the conference appears satisfied for now after tabbing TCU and West Virginia instead.
It's unclear what "disadvantages" Bramer might have been referring to aside from the fact that BYU won't play on Sundays. Cougars fans might point out another disadvantage: BYU won six of its last seven basketball meetings with the Aztecs.
