This morning, Jason King wrote a excellent summary of yesterday's Henry family mischief, in which Charles Henry responded to some furor over his antics in a Kansas City Star story
-- his claiming that his sons would both be one-and-done, his
insistence that C.J. Henry was better than national player of the year
candidate Sherron Collins, et. al. -- with this little bit of petulance:
“The guy that wrote that story betrayed my whole family,” said Carl Henry, who never claimed he was misquoted or that there were factual errors in the article. “He kind of made us look bad, like my kids are prima donnas and all I do is talk.” [Ed note: The reporter didn't have to try that hard.] Later in the interview, Carl Henry said: “So guess what? The kid may have a change of mind. That’s what I told Coach Self. If the kid has a change of mind, so what? So be it.”
As King writes today, Bill Self and Danny Manning had to fly to Oklahoma City last night to calm the Henrys down. That would be funny if it weren't so sad. Henry tells a Star reporter that he thinks his sons are better than Self's current players, and that Self better "get with the program." Then he mentions how he considered sending Xavier to Europe because "Xavier doesn't like to attend classes." Because learning stuff sucks!
Then, because KU fans don't like this sort of behavior around their basketball program, Henry threatens to take his basketball and go to Kentucky to play for John Calpari. And Self is the one mending fences? That's like apologizing to your girlfriend after she cheats on you. "No, no, I'M sorry. I should have known you were unhappy!" Gimme a break.
Now that the whole matter is settled -- Xavier texted a Kansas radio station with the message “I’m goin’ to Kansas and that's final.” -- we can all take a moment and reflect on this. Was there ever really any chance that Henry would take his sons to Kentucky? I say no.
Here's why: Kentucky has one scholarship to offer, and it's clear they'd be very interested in Xavier Henry, the younger, lankier, and more talented of the two players. But that's not really how it works with the Henrys. They're a package deal. So for Kentucky to take them both on, as Henry's father would probably demand, Kentucky would have to find a way to run off yet another scholarship player in an offseason in which they've already been heavily chided for doing so. Xavier's good and all, but isn't Kentucky talented enough already? Would John Calipari really want to get involved in that mess?
A lesser point: If C.J. Henry wants to be a one-and-done player -- as his father says -- Kentucky in 2008-09 is about the worst possible situation. The Wildcats already have John freaking Wall, the best player in the class of 2009, at point guard, not to mention Eric Bledsoe, one of the top point guards in the class under Wall, as his prospective backup. Is C.J. Henry, who hasn't played organized basketball in years, good enough to earn playing time next to either of those players? No. He's not.
So while Charles Henry could have sent his sons overseas, or found a professional workaround like the NBDL, or even a school that would start both of them, the odds that Xavier and C.J. were going to end up at Kentucky were never very high. Why, it's almost as if Charles Henry talks a lot!

Was Carl talking out of his ass? Yeah, it sounds like it. But it's reasonable when a player's father is talking the way he did on the radio to assume there's something behind it. Clearly Self thought so, or he wouldn't have hightailed it down there as quickly as he did.

Your incessant tirades against Coach Cal negates any credibility you think you may have. Any time there is an article about Coach Cal you spew your bs whether is has any relevance or not.Your comparison of him to other division coaches is laughable. Do you think anyone takes you seriously? Also you should be hoping instead that Xavier plays Coach Self's team game instead. You have watched CJ practice over the last 14 months. Who are you trying to fool? You are so full of it your eyes are feces brown.
Trent is right. We don't need Xavier. We're happy with who we have. You should be too. Good Luck to your Memphis Tigers. They deserve better fans than the likes of you.
