The Dagger - NCAAB

I'm not really sure why this video surfaced this weekend, or how, or how old it is -- it features Rick Carlisle when he was still coaching the Indianapolis Pacers and Shaq when Shaq was still giving non-Twitter interviews, so it's at least a few years old -- but I do know that I love it for a variety of reasons.

One is because it's about college basketball, and as you might have guessed, I have something of an interest in college basketball. (This is like saying Michael Jackson had an interest in Demerol.) Two, it features Luke Walton saying the best college basketball player of all-time was his dad, "because he's my dad!" And three, Bob Barker. That's all I'm going to say. Now watch.

See? I told you it was awesome. And it's got the old hamster wheels up to a'churnin' here ... just who was the greatest college basketball player of all-time? This sounds like an offseason post series, doesn't it?

(Big ups to the bots at Blitz Corner.)

Larry Bird. Indiana state was nothing w/ out the bird man. 2: Pistol Pete.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (then: Lew Alcindor). During his freshman year (back then, Freshman were ineligible to play), he scored 51 points to lead the UCLA junior varsity team to a victory over the #1 ranked, defending national champion UCLA varsity squad.

Pete Maravich played in an era when you could not dunk or shoot the 3-pointer. Career scoring average way over 40 points a game. Would have been over 50 had there been a 3-point line and was always double and triple teamed while on an average ball team. Alcindor would be my second pick. Make that 1A. David Thompson was also one of the very best.

Larry Bird carried Indiana State to the No. 1 seed in 1979, losing to Magic. How much better could one player be?
Or, perhaps, Walt "Clyde" Frazier leading Southern Illinois to the 1967 NIT title while SIU was still a lower division school.
Sure, its easy to pick Alcindor, or Walton, or Maravich. But go to the old Missouri Valley and find some great stars from the days before the BCS schools began to dominate.
