Aw, look at 'em. So young and full of joy. They haven't even started their soul-crushing 9-to-5 jobs yet! *Swoon.*
It's that time of year again. The time when a major, top-ranked team is
beaten by a team that, though an underdog, wasn't an obvious underdog,
in the underdog's building. The time when, as a result, thousands of
college kids lose their minds and storm the court on which the upset
just took place. And, yes, the time when people spend time analyzing
such displays of joy. That'd be me. It's a tough job, but somebody's
got to do it.
Should Wake Forest's fans have stormed the court? FanHouse's Adam thinks not,
citing Wake Forest's conference and rank as a reason why even a win
over the favored Tar Heels doesn't qualify for court-storming status.
He has a few strange rules in his post -- i.e. "No storming the court
if you're a BCS team," which is sort of weak; what if Northwestern beats the No. 1 team in the country at home? -- but all in all the
point is correct: Wake Forest's fans shouldn't have stormed the court.
The No. 4 team in the country beat the No. 3. At home. Come on, guys. Sorry to be the
buzzkill, but that's not court-storming material.
Go-home-and-have-seven-beers-to-kill-the-adrenaline-because-it's-Sunday-and-you're-in-college
material? Yes. Court-storming, no.
This isn't a big deal in and of itself, but it has become an epidemic
in college basketball, and it's watering down a previously sacred rite
of upset passage. Now? Everyone's storming the floor, in every
conference, at every level. Stop it, college kids. Stop using any
excuse to go run and jump on your home team's wood floor. And for that
matter, stop having so much fun. You're not only ruining the
court-storm, but you're making me really, really jealous. And that is
something we just can't have.

And Red Ruddy, big rivalries don't justify it either. Last year when Ronald Ramon registered the first buzzer-beater in the history of the Pete by nailing a 3 as time expired to beat WVU, we went crazy, but we never stormed the court. Storming the court/field is only justified when an unranked team defeats a highly ranked (preferably #1) team. Like Oregon State vs. USC this year in football.

also, the spreads *opened* at 9 or so and everyone and their mother bet on wake. the spread closed at 5.5. that is not a huge upset at all.

One might not think that this was a court rushing event, but little ole Wake Forest has never gotten the respect we deserve, out ACC Football championship was a fluke, only to be followed up with two great seasons of Football. Men's soccer just competed in their third consecutive College Cup, and the Field Hockey team has gone to the NCAA Final Four EIGHT consecutive years. All this from a school with 4000 students. So yeah, maybe when the media and rest of the ACC quit seating Wake at the kids' table for dinner we'll exercise our option to act with restraint
