Nike addressed LeBron's Tapegate today and, not surprisingly, the company denied everything, except that the dunk itself happened.

An article in the Cleveland Plain Dealer (which reads a lot like a Nike press release) quotes Nike officials as saying that the confiscation of the tapes had nothing to do with the dunk. Instead, it stemmed from a policy that prohibits any media from filming the pick-up games at the LeBron James Skills Academy:

"Nike has been operating basketball camps for the benefit of young athletes for decades and has longstanding policies in place regarding what events are open and closed to media coverage," Nike spokesman KeJuan Wilkins said.

"Unfortunately, for the first time in four years, two journalists did not respect our 'no videotaping' policy at an after-hours pick-up game Monday evening following the LeBron James Skills Academy."

That sort of makes sense. Have you ever seen clips of pros playing pick-up games with college kids? I never have. Advantage: Nike.

But then I read this quote:

According to Nike officials, both journalists understood the mistake and handed over their tapes without making a fuss. Neither cameraman was available for comment Wednesday night.

Actually, one of the cameraman (Ryan Miller, who was quoted in the blog post that started this whole mess) seems to be talking to anybody who will listen. And his quotes suggest that he didn't believe he made a mistake.

They claimed you weren't supposed to be shooting the college and the pro guys working out, and I was told earlier in the day that you could, and there was no media policy saying you couldn't.

Nike says that shooting earlier in the day was fine, just not during the games. So maybe Miller was confused. But he certainly didn't think he had made a mistake, as Nike claimed. Advantage: Toss-up.

If the spokesman stretched the truth with that quote, where else was liberty taken in this story? Was there actually a policy? This wasn't just one cameraman, but two, who didn't follow policy. In four years, for the first time, two journalists violate the same rule on a night when LeBron James got posterized by a kid who didn't average double-figures at Indiana?

This is the classic "he said/she said" battle and I doubt we'll ever get conclusive proof one side was right and one side was wrong. If you don't like LeBron, you'll use this as another reason to rag on him come NBA season. If you're a LeBron fan, then Nike's logical excuse is what you'll believe.

Whichever way you go, you can't deny this: Michael Jordan never would have let this happen. I know he played in a different time without YouTube and bloggers, but, come on. If MJ got dunked on by Rusty LaRue in 1993, we wouldn't be having this conversation today. Michael would have either peeled off two hundreds for the cameramen or, if he sensed resistance, would have had Charles Oakley come over and break the cameras. And those college kids wouldn't be mouthing off to writers, they'd be saying nothing because MJ instilled the fear of his wrath.

This whole mess provides another reason why LeBron will never be Michael.

You seem to have a bias against LeBron in place already, but to your Jordan comment I don't think LBJ is trying very hard to be Jordan. The real MJ impersonator resides in LA and everybody knows it, its not a bad thing but what do LBJ & MJ really have in common besides a jersey number anyway?

This is a horrible writer, a hater. When you chose to write for a living, you give facts. Not he said/she said - and maybe's. You don't end your story with how much you like MJ and not Lebron - thats a personal opinion. And all this pointless article is going to do, is have about 2,000 people write Lebron sucks kobe rules - or Lebron is the best player ever - will break all of MJ's stats.Yahoo has the worst sports writers and "sources" I have ever seen. I live in clveland, I love to watch Lebron play. Did someone dunk on him in a week long minicamp. Probably. Could this happen to any NBA player ever? Yes! There not perfect or gods. Kobe and MJ have been dunked on by lesser people. But since this is Lebron and writen by a hater. It makes Yahoo sports headlines. This is not news, its hype to get people to read a crap article. Yahoo, you look really stupid right now.

I can hear Lil Dez speak to Lebron now... "Is it true you got dunked on by a college kid? Can I see that footage? Was it a windmill or a 360 dunk? Did you think he was gonna lay it up? Are your hopes and dreams shattered now that Artest is gonna check you in the Finals next season? Does Shaq have a copy of this footage? Don't worry LeBron, even MJ got dunked on by Starks... Can we play 1 on 1?"

Phillip, do you know what a blog is? It's where a writer voices his opinion. He's well within his rights to say Lebron will never be as good as MJ. Is it true? Who knows. but it's his opinion.

What a big stink over nothing. Like him or not, LBJ's skills are unquestionably today's paradigm of the NBA. The lack of this video tape doesn't reflect badly on the man. But this sort of milk toasty reporting reflects badly on the no talent journalistic midgets nipping at LBJ's ankles, who don't have news worthy stories to report on, so they resort to manufacturing them.

Gundy, you sir are absolutely correct. Michael Jackson was a filthy pedophile. Only in America can a pedophile be revered as a hero and legend when he dies. Then the taxpayers get to pay the 4 million dollar bill for his funeral.

I love Jordan but if something like this happened back then you know who would have heard about it? Nobody. Only thanks to the internet could something like this become as big as you've made it to be so it's unfair to compare eras in this respect, especially with the media's scrutiny of the players off the court

Bunch of haters. Like the rules say, no taping.
Media and all you sheep believe LeBron took the tape, yeah right.. Why didnt he take the tape of him losing in HORSE also?
LeBron got dunked on chasing down an Orlando player. So what, every pro has gotten dunked on from Jordan to Nash, Josh Smith, Mutombo, Ewing, Olajuwon, and so on.
You actually think he was going all out in a pickup game?? LOL.. Right like he'd blow out his achilles playing a pickup game. You guys are hilarious.
