The Dagger - NCAAB

Memphis fans, you may now begin freaking out. Kentucky fans, you may now begin getting slightly unnerved. According to the Memphis Commercial-Appeal, the NCAA sent a letter to the Memphis athletic department today alleging major violations against the school's basketball program under John Calipari. Chief among the allegations is "knowing and fraudulent" misconduct on an SAT exam in the 2007-08 season. The NCAA is also charging Memphis with "failure to monitor" in regards to $2,000-plus in free travel to "an associate of a player."

In other words, it's bad.

There are, though, a few important take-a-deep-breath caveats. One: Josh Pastner wasn't a member of the Memphis staff at the time of any of the allegations, so his name is apparently clear. Two: Memphis as a program wasn't cited with "lack of institutional control," which would be even worse. Three: John Calipari isn't named in the report. (That sound you hear is Kentucky fans jumping.) He is, however, being asked to attend the hearing. Either way, not good.

What does the charge mean? The name of the player is redacted, but the letter -- which you can read here -- is phrased in such a way that it seems the player in question played only the 2007-08 season and 2008 NCAA tournament. The only player on that team who played only one tournament would be Derrick Rose, Mr. No. 1 overall pick in the 2008 NBA draft.

So the charge means, essentially, that someone in the Memphis program (or someone outside it) faked Derrick Rose's SAT scores, and that someone within the Memphis program knew about it. No good SAT score means no good Derrick Rose means, probably, no really good NCAA tournament runner-up finish in 2008, and so on. You get the picture.

The biggest fallout here could be related to John Calipari. After all, his hire at Kentucky has made the biggest college hoops coaching splash in recent memory, and the only temper to UK's enthusiasm has been the uncomfortable notion that Calipari's past has its share of clear calls with the NCAA. This is another. Maybe it's nothing; maybe Calipari escapes from this unscathed, just like before. Or maybe not. Maybe this is the one that finally brings Calipari down. That's the outcome Kentucky fans -- and college basketball fans at large, honestly -- don't want to think about.

Excuses? There's no excuses to give. Coach Cal was not mentioned as being any type of central figure to the issue. This is a lot of hoopla that will boil over into nothing soon enough.

Sure, Cal knew nothing of his star recruit's struggles to qualify academically or travel accommodations for his entourage. Just keep telling yourself that.

Suddenly.... Calipari's calamari has gone sour! Either way.... It happened at Memphis, Calipari will not be part of the verdict, if any, and UK will still win the National Championship this season!!!!

If Calipari isn't mentioned in the report, why are all the major sports media outlets trying to implicate him? Also, didn't Kentucky get an approval from the NCAA before they hired Calipari?

...and OJ was found not guilty of murder and the CEOs of Enron were in no way responsible for anything that went on there. If he was not at UK, you would not be defending him. If you truly think he is innocent, then take off your blinders and face bball reality. Cal. Is. A. Cheat. Only coach to vacate two final fours? Ouch. But what makes it most interesting is that he was competely unaware of either allegations. Shocking!

TOBB: I'm not telling myself anything. I read the report. Calipari is not expressly tied to any of the aforementioned implications. He will be questioned about his knowledge of the situation, and it may be that he did have some knowing of what happened. But do you think he's going to tell if he did? Not a chance. I know, not exactly a kosher start to things, but that's the way it seems to go. I expect a lot of noise from this for a while, then it'll die down like everything else the NCAA has investigated of late (anyone have even the slight clue what is going on with Bush and Mayo now?).

Shawn S. No his name is not mentioned anywhere. Because it doesnt need to be mentioned. He was the gd head coach of the team this went on.....im sure he was an innocent bystander, just like at UMASS. Now he is forcing kids out at Kentucky. Coach Cal has been dirty his whole career, and still hasnt won a thing.

this is turning into a steroids type issue with big names in college basketball being linked to cheating. Jim Calhoun, John Calipari...who's next? Coach K? Roy Williams? this is not good for the sport, no matter how much i love seeing calipari go down.

Where was Wetzel on this story? The letter was dated 1/16/09. Must still checking his facts lest he rush a story with faulty details. Sorry, my bad, he's a UMass grad and ran the other way when he caught wind of this.

Craig H: I am reading this purely based on implication. HE is not implicated. If you read the documents, you'll notice the NCAA doesn't hold anything back in terms of laying out where they wish to implicate someone, as they reamed Memphis's Women's Golf coach without any issue. If they wanted to tie Calipari to the matter, they would have done so. But since they did not expressly implicate him to any of the charges, it's something to believe that he is not going to be tied into any potential charges.
