Actually, I'm not even sure you can call it a "blunder." The rules on coaches using Twitter are so nebulous and strange and seemingly ever-changing,
I'm not sure Tom Crean has done anything wrong here. But even if it's
not illegal, Crean's decision to follow recruit Kyle Irving is probably
a little bit sketchy.
Have no idea what I'm talking about? Yeah, me neither. But let's try to explain.
Last we checked, most college coaches using Twitter have used it as a one-way broadcasting service. They don't follow recruits, they don't use messaging features, and they don't do anything that could potentially violate any sort of text- or email-related NCAA recruiting rules. Crean used to be this way. His followers were numerous; his "following" number was always 0.
No more. Now, Crean is following other users: @YahooSportsNBA (yeah, son!), @NBA, @kevineastman and @kyrieirving. Irving is the important one here. He's Rivals's No. 14-ranked recruit for the class of 2010. Indiana has been heavily involved in his recruitment. And as fellow Postman For Life Ryan Corazza explains at ESPN, Crean has made it blatantly clear that he's paying attention to what Irving does on the service:
It's no secret he and his staff have been going hard after Kyrie Irving, a point guard out of St. Patrick's in Elizabeth, N.J. Rivals ranks him as the No. 14 recruit in the 2010 class. Not only does Crean follow Irving, there's been at least one instance of Crean directly pandering to Irving. After Irving tweeted "hungry and humble for more," Crean later followed with: "We need CONSISTENT TOUGHNESS AND CONFIDENDT COMPETITORS! We need HUNGRY and HUMBLE WARRIORS!"
It's obvious that Crean isn't trying to hide this, and like I said, it's not like there's a law being broken here, but it does kind-of-sort-of violate the apparently happy medium coaches had carved out for themselves on Twitter. Catering your Tweets to recruits is one thing; borderline-interacting with them is another. And is it even that much of a recruiting advantage? Is Irving so impressed with Crean's social media skills he's going to drop everything and sign a letter of intent yesterday?
All questions I don't have the answers for. But if a Twitter-fueled college basketball dystopia awaits us, don't say you weren't warned.

As for the pandering or obvious ass-kissing, if Irving can't see that for himself, maybe they deserve each other.
Much ado about nothing!

if you have a twitter account you are a fricking loser with no life!!!!! Get off your asses and do something besides talk crap you cant back-up.

Oh really? And you sitting on your ass here on Yahoo telling people they are a loser and get off their asses isn't just a tad bit hypocritical. If you're going to stroke your e-penis and try to act like an internet tough guy, fine, I couldn't care less. But don't do the exact same thing you are supposedly putting people down for. Makes you look like a dumbass. Though I did get a good laugh you looking like such.
