The Dagger - NCAAB

Ah, the old block/charge call. As an official, there's nothing quite so difficult in sports to get right, and as a player or coach, there's nothing quite so frustrating to see called incorrectly. (Pat Knight has been down this road before.) Such is the nature of USC coach Tim Floyd's reaction to last night's block/charge at Arizona State, wherein Daniel Hackett drove into the lane, was cut off by a still-moving Arizona State defender, and was called for a charge. Tim Floyd was angry ... disproportionately so:

The best is Floyd's half-"hold me back" routine as he's leaving the court. It's like he wants to run back out and yell at the refs some more, but not really. At some point between getting kicked out and being ushered off the floor by athletics personnel, he decides it's probably just a better idea to watch from the locker room. And another ejected cowboy rides off into the sunset.

I'm an ASU fan, but those PAC-10 refs are horrible.

    Can't imagine a world where that's a charge.

Horrible call... wasn't even CLOSE! The defender didn't even begin to plant his feet.

funny reaction, but that's one of the worst calls I've seen in a lonnnnnng time. never seen a more blatant blocking foul called a charge in my life

Something needs to be done about the Pac-10 refs. If you watch a lot of bball you must agree they call the game completely different than in any other league.

Watched the game on TV - not an ASU or USC fan - not a charge.....probably wouldn't have mattered anyway.

And I think what Floyd was the MOST disturbed about was that the ref that called it a blocking foul refused to go talk to the ref that called it a charge

wasn't the first time a Los Angeles based school got hosed on a bad charge call, happened to UCLA a few days before... as one poster above stated his feet were set, doesn't matter, he leaned into the offensive player...

It's not just Pac-10 refs....there is a definite bias to calling the charge in college sports versus the block. Doesn't matter what conference it is. Bring back the half circle too imho!

Ridiculous call, Ref should be suspended and so should Floyd, cuz no matter how bad the call was, the reaction was way blown out of proportion. Wow a Pac-10 ref blowing a call? I've NEVER seen that B4! Sike!

#3, his feet were not set. I could care less about the game but to say that was a charge comes from someone who knows nothing about basketball.
