The Dagger - NCAAB

There will be no glass slipper for Stephen Curry this year. The breakout star of last year's NCAA tournament and a preseason candidate for National Player of the Year won't be repeating his tournament heroics in 2009, as he and his Davidson teammates fell in the Southern Conference semifinals to the College of Charleston 59-52

It's a disheartening end to a season that began with so much promise. Early this season, Davidson was ranked, had a number of nationally televised games and figured to be a shoo-in for the tourney. But the Wildcats were unable to take advantage of their high-profile schedule, winning just two games against teams in the RPI top 125.

With the Southern Conference ranked No. 20 among the 32 Division I conferences (and only that high because of Curry and Davidson) and the team's RPI hovering in the 70s, the squad knew early on that it would take a conference tournament title to make the NCAAs. Once the conference schedule ended, the hype died down and Curry went back to being an under-the-radar star in a low-major conference.

The team finished with an impressive 18-2 conference record, earning a No. 1 seed in its tournament. But after an easy win in the quarterfinals, the Wildcats were stymied in the semis by a College of Charleston team that had an identical 26-7 overall record (albeit with a far inferior nonconference sked).

Curry had 20 points on 5-of-18 shooting (including 2-of-11 from 3-point range). It is widely believed that the junior will enter the NBA draft (where he is expected to be a mid-first round pick) after the season, which will disappointingly end in the NIT.

As a college basketball fan I hope Curry decides to return to Davidson for his senior season. His performance in last year's tournament was one of the best ever. Just ask Kansas about their game against Davidson on their way to the championship. He's also a nice young man.

How is this disrespectful of Duke? Also, that's an impressive conference record. Didn't realize they played 30 games in their conference.

Personally I can see Davidson sneaking into the tournament despite their record against teams in the RPI 125. Remember that teams in the Pac 10, SEC, and Big Ten haven't made a good enough case for their tournament bids. This team will get a 12th seed.

I can't believe they have to play 30 conference games. That has to be hard on the team. I hope Stephan comes back to guide them into the tournament again.

They were 18-2 in the SoCon, not 18-12...with so few decent OOC wins, and not even making the conference tourney final, I can't disagree with Davidson not getting an at-large bid.

The Head Coach at Davidson should take full responsibility for Curry not getting back to the NCAA tournament! He knew what he had coming back and it is his fault for not going out and recruiting a point guard to bring in to replace Richards thus making Curry have to do it. Davidson was the talk of college basketball last year and what does he do in recruiting? NOTHING!!! Thus giving Curry no new help for this season! Terrible job on his part!!

    1. Stephen Curry has to do what's right for Stephen Curry, not Davidson. And that, almost certainly, is going to the NBA. 2. It would have been great for them to have a quality PG, but much of Richards' ability came from what he learned in college. To find someone who could match that as a freshman and convince them to go to Davidson to play with Curry for one year... the coach would get a job in the Big East if he could recruit that well.

I can't believe people actually think they play 30 conference games when teams typically play 30 TOTAL games before postseason... oh you'll believe anything you see on the Internet, won't you?
But seriously, let's give some credit to the College of Charleston and Bobby Cremins' comeback, just a little bit...

There is no way they get in as an at-large. No way. Zero chance. I'm serious. There is not 1% chance. There is 0% chance. There are at least 10-15 teams on the bubble that are ahead of them that might not get in. Everyone would like to see Curry play a couple more games but if they get in the tourney(which they will not) then something is completely fixed and rigged. NIT bound 100% fact.

There is no I in TEAM!!!! It takes a team effort to do anything. Stephen Curry is a talented player and had a great tournament LAST YEAR!!!. He had an awesome year for the season this year, and was a team player even when he scored very little points when he was double teamed the whole game earlier this year and the TEAM won. I think they will make the NIT and I hope he sticks around in college for at least one more year. I hope he lights up the NIT tournament and makes it fun to watch. Peace

Curry will light up the NBA with his talent, and in a few years his brother will be there too. Davidson made it fun with their run last year, who will it be this year?
