The Dagger - NCAAB

It's not even 12 hours since the original John Wall-to-Kentucky story broke, and already we have a new consensus favorite to win the 2009-10 national title: the Kentucky Wildcats.

Wall is that good. He tips the scales that much. But, in the words of the dude on "Reading Rainbow," you don't have to take my word for it. Pretty much everyone seems to agree, starting with Fox Sports' Jeff Goodman, who did a quick re-boot of his early preseason Top 25 rankings so as to include Kentucky at the top:

Just think about this: Two fringe McDonald's All-Americans -- Daniel Orton and Eric Bledsoe -- will be role players who probably won't see the floor with the game on the line. Wall and Meeks in the backcourt with a big man trio of Patterson and heralded freshmen bigs DeMarcus Cousins and Orton make this group the deepest and most talented in the nation.

Dan Shanoff, noted Florida fan, is also jumping on the bandwagon:

Why? Because UK reportedly just got super-prospect John Wall, who instantly becomes the best player in college basketball. Wall isn't just a lock as the No. 1 overall pick of the 2010 NBA Draft -- he could have been in the mix for the No. 1 pick THIS year. But it's not just Wall. It's the return of Patrick Patterson, the best post player in the country. It's the collection of a recruiting class that was arguably No. 1 in the country BEFORE Wall joined.

It goes on. Rush the Court says "with all due respect ... that looks like the No. 1 lineup to us." Chris Littman at The Sporting Blog headlines: "UK Adds John Wall; NCAA Cancels Season." FanHouse says "expectations go up to 11." And I agree. How could you not? Most of the aforementioned quotes hedge on Jodie Meeks' return, but even if Meeks stays home, Calipari just added the No. 1 overall recruit -- a player capable of this -- to what was already the country's best recruiting class. Throw that in with Patrick Patterson's return, and even if Meeks decides to stay in the draft, Kentucky is a top five team, easily. Those recruits are that good. And if we've learned anything in the one-and-done era, it's that inexperience doesn't matter as much as we might think. Truly special players are special at any age.

You might say that Kentucky's biggest prospective weakness is also its architect: Calipari. The challenge now involves working all this talent -- the dynamic between Bledsoe and Wall will be especially interesting -- into team that won't only dominate its conference rivals but that is built for the postseason, too. Calipari's put this monstrosity of a team together. Now he has to actually coach it. I believe you can put that in the "good problems" file.

Even with this recruiting class, I still don't think they are the favorites to win the title in 2010. I believe the KU Jayhawks have the talent, experience, and depth to still be considered the team to beat.

Yes Kentucky has a rediculous recruiting class, and yes they have a great couple of players in Meeks and Patterson, but I don't think they are the favorities to win the 2010 title. Like Scotty said, Kansas has the talent, experience, and depth to take it from them. Calipari is a good, not great, coach, and I think he may have difficulty coaching this team in a way that would optimize their ability and talents. With all the amazing talent on this team, they are going to be fighting with each other for playing time, which is good and bad. It's great because it fosters competition and pushes each athlete to be better so they get the minutes. During games however this could be problematic I think. Each of these players are use to being the "main man" and that may not be the case now. I truly think the inexperience will cause some of these players to try to do too much themselves, and will make it difficult to develop a chemistry that gets all the players involved. In short, I think it could be quite difficult to get these young men to play as a team!! Surely each of them have their minds set on the NBA..... quite possibly after one season with the cats. Each one of them will be trying their best to push themselves up the draft, and may cause a little ball hogging syndrome. I personally also think that Bledsoe would be MUCH happier with a Wall-less Kentucky Wildcats. It could cause some tention there, and a bit of dysfuntion. Those are my thoughts anyway. If Calipari can actually pull it off and get these guys playing as a team..... well then they will be pretty tough to beat for anyone, including the Jayhawks. Anyway, IU is going to beat you all!! lol... jk. We are coming along good though, and should be back where we belong in a year or two. Until then, GO HOOSIERS!!! :-)

Who knows if they're the real #1 team? All I know is I'm really happy with the Calapari hiring, really excited about this recruiting class and can't wait to watch'em play ball next year.
Calapari already made a good point. Half the players are true freshman, new to the college game. The other half the players have never played in the dribble drive offense. But man is it going to be fun to watch! No more of those "defensive battles" and low scoring 52 pt. games.

wow if meeks comes back like he's expected to, uk will b the most talented deepest team in the country. preseason rankings dont mean much, but im still gonna have to put kansas at #1. kentucky has 6 freshman and the rest of the team hasnt played in the ddmo yet. id say its gonna go pretty much like coach cal said the other day. kinda sloppy at first with bad shots and some turnovers, then a couple breakout games in january, running teams into the ground in february, and playing their best by march. the potential is there, but as far as preason rankings go, kansas can b #1 for now. i do think if kentucky gets it right and gels as a team and is playing their best in march, they will b plenty capable of beating any team that gets in their way, including a very talented kansas team. for the hoosier fan above, dont worry your iu program is in good hands with tom crean. he will have iu back in a couple years.

One player that really goes under the radar is Darius Miller, plus we may still have Matt Pilgrim. Kansas is good but Meeks, Patterson, Wall, Cousins, Orton, Pilgrim, Miller, Eric Bledsoe and potentially Jon Hood are all considered future NBA players. I respect Kansas and they will be tough as will North Carolina, but I can't imagine a deeper team right now. UK plays UCONN and UNC early on so we'll see how good we really are soon enough.

No one Kansas has at point can guard Wall one on one--no one! That puts Kansas at a disadvantage from the outset. Plus, they will be dependent on a few freshmen as well, Henry, etc.. Bledsoe gives UK another solid ball-handler to spell Wall, without much of a drop-off in talent, and also to spell Meeks, with just a bit of a drop-off in shooting percentage. Patterson and Cousins will be a tandem in the middle that no team will be able to match up with properly, and you know that... Can't double team one or the other without suffering. Miller at the small forward brings speed, quickness, to the small forward position. Wall will get past any pg and when he does, the other team's big(s) will come to pick him up, leaving a big open inside or a shooter open on the perimeter and there will be nothing the opposing team can do to stop it even though they know it is coming... beautiful isn't it? :) With Wall, #1 yeah, cause it will take two or more people to guard him...

Prediction: Kansas wins National title. Kentucky will be good but Cal is putting in a new offense and defensive system in plus trying to work all these players in. Dont forget that Cal had one of the best point guards on college and could not win a national title. It took cal years to build a team that could compete for a national title. I will be curious to see if Meeks comes back how he handles Cal bench him because of his defense. Being tiger fan I can tell from experience that it was Cal who got us to the championship game and he was the reason that we lost.

I think all the haters on here need ot shut up.... Calipari is a great coach...not a good one.... great coaches make final fours and title games at schools like UMASS and MEMPHIS...where its harder to win....
Every fan in the world would love to have this recruiting class.....I don't care who they are....I mean there is no one that can argue, this class will rival the fab five for the best class in history. No questions asked!!!!
People just hate the fact that we are back, at the top, and everyone else can't stand it.....

It's a good time to be a UK Wildcat fan. Our football team has won three straight bowls and just had our best recruiting class in 30+ years and our basketball team is back where I remember it always being, sans the last 5-6 years.
This summer is gonna be brutal in anticipation for the fall!

With this signing, it's hard not to be thinking final four at the least. I'm a Cats fan who lives in Columbus, OH., and I saw first hand (with Ohio St. in 2007) what freshman lightning in a bottle, mixed with some seasoned veterans can do. Lest we forget Memphis, and even Syracuse with Melo. I respect Kansas, but is there a program that has ever disapointed more often when expectations were high??? C-A-T-S, Cats! Cats! Cats!

GO BIG BLUE!!! I can't wait for basketball season in Kentucky. I'm not foolish enough to expect a championship or final four next season, but I do expect to not have players standing around, dribbling and not knowing what to do with the ball or worrying about being pulled to the bench for a Billy ass chewing. It's got to be better than the last 2 years.

Jerry H...you said you can't wait to see how M33KS handles it when "Cal benchs him because of his defense"...
Uh, dude, M33KS defense is better than anything you have seen at memphis. He is almost a lock down defender.
