The Hunt: No. 18, Duke

The Hunt for the Most Interesting Team in the World is the Dagger's 2009-10 countdown preview series. Check out the overriding principles here.

Last year's record: 30-7 (11-5, ACC)

2009-2010's toughest games: Arizona State, NIT final/consolation vs. Connecticut or LSU, at Wisconsin, vs. Gonzaga, at Georgetown

Primary attraction: Because no matter how much you can't stand them, you know you can't turn away.

Three items of undeniable interest:

1. It's Duke -- Before you comment about any perceived anti-Duke bias, remember this: The Hunt set out to find "the most interesting team in the world" and this Duke team isn't very interesting. They're going to be good, yes. But there's little to separate this version of the Blue Devils from the other editions from the past quarter-century. They'll be fundamentally sound. They'll play smart basketball. They'll win 25 games. They'll get more calls than they don't. Coach K will scowl. The Cameron Crazies will be alternately obnoxious and clever. Kyle Singler is going to be an All-American. Dick Vitale will talk about how much he loves Steve Wojciechowski and will then comment that it's a crime J.J. Redick doesn't get more PT in the NBA. Somebody will slap the floor. We've seen this movie before.

2. Holes? -- Listening to some of the people hyping Duke this year, you'd almost forget that the Blue Devils lost its best player (Gerald Henderson), an up-and-coming guard (Elliot Williams) and a senior starter-turned off the bench threat (Greg Paulus). But the departures of the latter two create some serious thinness at guard for Coach K. Jon Scheyer isn't a true point and Nolan Smith has been streaky, at best, during his two years in Durham. Things are a better in the frontcourt, where Singler will line-up with 7-foot-1 Brian Zoubek and freshman Mason Plumlee (when he returns from injury), but the forward-heavy lineup may force Krzyzewski to do the unthinkable and play some zone defense at Cameron.

3. Ending the drought -- It's been five years since Duke played in a regional final. For a team has the greatest college basketball coach of all-time (yeah, I said it) and starts more McDonald's All-Americans than entire conferences, that's a stunning statistic. Though the aforementioned holes might give Duke some trouble during the regular season, I have a feeling that this is the year the Blue Devils get out of their NCAA tournament funk.

Duke basketball in 90 seconds: I made it seven seconds before turning it off. How long can you stand it? This should have been a Fear Factor competition.

    Hey Chris,
I can't believe you of all people would put Duke at #18 in a countdown of most interesting basketball teams. Based on how often you wrote about them last year, I would expect them to be in the top 5. If they really aren't all that interesting than why were you popping out Duke articles multiple times a week last year? It doesn't add up, this team isn't really all that different. I know you love to hate Duke, so why pretend you don't and put them this low? Please explain.

I write about Brett Favre all the time too at Shutdown Corner, it doesn't mean I find him interesting. But, Chris, I also wrote "Because no matter how much you can't stand them, you know you can't turn away." I watch the Dukies because they play great basketball and are fun to hate.

First, I can guarantee you can't find 17 teams more interesting than Duke, though I guess that doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things. Second, I generally associate spending a lot of time on a subject as having some interest. Whatever, being interesting doesn't win championships. If Duke can fly under the radar this year I suppose that's a good thing. By the way, your it's Duke summary is pretty good, except I see them having around 30 wins heading into the tourney, definitely being in the top 10 and getting a 1 or 2 seed, which I guess is also typical.

I'm fairly nonpartisan, as I hate the ACC and all the teams in it, but I watched Duke against Charlotte, and they're playing interesting basketball. As a viewer, I love when teams work out of the box. Last year's Mizzou team is a good example. They had games that just blew my mind. When I watched Duke, I saw four potential forwards playing perimeter, using screens in ways that are never used, being interesting.

Whoa, whoa, whoa ... we quit the floor-slapping YEARS ago. (Plus, Paulus is throwing interceptions at Syracuse now, so the leading contender to bring it back is even gone.)

Since this is nothing more than a list of interesting teams, i'm not mad at Duke being #18. BUT... if you sit there and include UNC infront of us you're just being a idiot. Becuz, there is nothing interesting about a team that can't shoot score around 60 or 70 a game and all they can do is block shots!!! Also, u don't need to include Gtown or Nova or any of them teams from the Big East that have a high scoring game of 55 points, becuz that is not interesting bball!!!

#22 USC, yes the Trojans. The football team doesn't deserve 22, so who give a ---- what Yahoo rates any sports team? Eamonn do you watch college basketball? When you smoke lots of pot you rank USC 22 and you spell BECAUSE, becuz.

At first glance, reviewing the schleprospective Dookommercial in its entirety seemed doable. Whatever identity construct that the visual psychoactive was designed to implant would surely be obvious, and at any length hardly lethal. What I failed to consider, however, was the precipitous loss of visceral function that immediately accompanies any attempt at multiple exposure to the dreaded clip of C. U. Laetnner's fleeting brush with athleticism. The instinct to survive cannot be subdued indefinitely, and my resolve became weaker with every sighting of the Angola Glower, the Epitome of Overgrown Ineptitude, the Luminously Limited Leviathan, the Montage Monstrosity. The effect of recognizing Robert M Hurley in a few frames will not be discussed per the counsel gifted Shaman retained for removal of the blanketing cloak of loser one invariable acquires from even such a brief and remote encounter. Needless to say, I was unable, or better yet quite fortunate to make it through the entire clip, and thankfully shut it down at 55 seconds. This description the damage inflicted by allowing the clip to run just to its halfway mark serves as a warning to any others so foolhardily inclined.

I'm a Duke fan and was encouraged by the results until I just watched the moribund Arizona State game. There was probably more action at the New York City morgue tonight than by the Duke team at the Garden. They will compete more or less with UConn Friday, and UNC et al later this year, but will not be a great team unless they get a shot of some serious new adrenaline or something. I may have to watch C-Span instead of Duke at times this year.
