The Dagger - NCAAB

The Big Ten Network has a bit of a vested interest in the Big Ten being seen as compelling programming. Sure, there will always be the die-hards, the people who will pay whatever it costs to get their fix of their former university. But there's also a distinct group of casual fans out there, people in, say, the Chicago area, who sort of care about the Big Ten but maybe not enough to call their cable provider and have it added to their monthly bill. Those are the people the Big Ten Network needs to sell to.

So while I highly doubt the Big Ten announcer in question here is self-consciously selling the Big Ten, it certainly doesn't hurt that he's willing to drop ridiculous nuggets like this on the air:

Yes, you heard correctly: Dude thinks the Big Ten is "arguably" the best conference in college basketball. Um, no. It's not. That's still the Big East.

Don't get me wrong, the Big Ten has been surprisingly good. Minnesota and Michigan and Illinois have all been better than advertised, and even Penn State has a shot at the tournament. But with Wisconsin down and Purdue still short of the national top tier, the Big Ten just isn't as good. And that's OK. It doesn't need to be. Arguing about conferences is stupid, anyway. The only people who care about this stuff are ... well, conference executives. The rest of us tuned out long ago.

Ha, did the announcer also say the most entertaining. When I was watching the Illini drop 36 on Minnesota I sure was entertained.

i care. 16 teams in the big east. 11 in the big 10, that makes a difference. plus is anyone actaully afraid of pitt? last year they were supposed to mop the floor with msu in the ncaa tournament didnt happen. pitt is very overrated. the bottom half of the big east is a lot worse than the bottom half of the big then, and the top half of thebig east is better than the big tens but not by as much as how bad their bottom half is. how is g-town ranked? theyve lost 4 in a row.

All depnds on what makes a conference "best." Most good teams, then yes it's the Big East. The numbers work to their advantage. Best really good teams is the ACC. Best average team is the ACC. But the Big 10 is very good, and is the conference with the fewest bad teams.
I know the Big East was annointed as best before the season and had lots of teams ranked, who then went out in non-conference play and were not overly impressive. Very good, but not great. And yet nothing changed in the polls. So the media still thinks they're the greatest. Since being supersized, the league has 22 tournament bids and 1 Final Four.
Now, the truly ridiculous comment is the entertaining remark. Uh no. The Big 10 brand of basketball may be effective at producing wins but it is much less so at producing entertainment value.

"Arguably could be the best" =/= "arguably the best", but that's just semantics.

Worse than the Big East and ACC, better than the Pac-10, Big 12, and SEC. Good enough for me.

From top to bottom the Big 10 is argubly the best conference in the nation... most current bracket projections put a higher percentage of big 10 teams in the tourney than any other conference. Not to mention in OOC, the big 10 had more quality wins than anyone...
As for it not mattering, tell that to the selection committee.

would not say they are the best, but the big ten is solid from top to bottom except indiana. all other 10 teams in the conf are in the top 100 rpi. mich st, illinois, minnesota, wisconsin and ohio state in the top 50 with michigan and norwestern almost top 50. mich st is the elite team but after that there are alot of solid teams battling for position. give minnesota a few more years with tubby recruiting and instituting his style and they are going to be tough. i would argue that the big ten has the best coaching in the country. izzo, matta, ryan, weber, smith, painter.

worst comment i have heard in a while. Maybe they should have a big 10/big east challenge since the ACC already dominates the big 10. I would predict much of the same pounding
