Those mischievous scamps from collegehumor.com were up to more shenanigans last night at the Wake Forest-Maryland game. At halftime, a guy from the site, Streeter, came out and asked the crowd for its help in pranking his friend Amir. It was to be the latest in their ongoing (and hilarious) prank war, which began fairly innocently (be careful of marginally NSFW language and content in College Humor links) and escalated in the previous installment when Amir set up Streeter by posting a fake marriage proposal on the Jumbotron at Yankee Stadium. Last night's gag was equally inspired:
The only thing keeping this from the greatness of the Yankee Stadium prank is that this time around I'm pretty sure Amir knew what was up. I'm not suggesting he was in on it, but watching it live last night and again on video this morning, I'm under the impression that he had figured out the game by the time the shot came around. A number of people sitting around me had similar thoughts too.
First of all, $500,000 is too much money to be giving away at halftime of a college basketball game, especially with the economy in the tank. Usually they're giving away free textbooks. That may seem like an "in retrospect" kind of thought, but seeing as how Amir was announced as the contestant and put on the Comcast Center video screen during the first half, he had plenty of time to think about it. I'd imagine that when you're in an ongoing prank war, you'd start to get suspicious about something like that. Plus, the reactions to both making the shot and the revealing of the prank seemed a little canned.
Either way, the whole thing was pretty funny. The crowd deserves a lot of credit for going appropriately bonkers when Amir "made" his shot. After Streeter came out at the beginning of the half to give his instructions, I thought the crowd reaction was going to be the prank's undoing. Instead, it was what made it work so well.
