The Dagger - NCAAB

As the decade winds down, The Dagger will celebrate the past 10 years of college basketball with various top 10 lists. Today, we at look at the 10 best games of the 2000s:

10. Villanova 78, Pittsburgh 76 -- Regional final, 2009 NCAA tournament

The Big East battle featured six lead changes in the final six minutes, game-tying free throws with 5.3 seconds on the clock and the memorable Scottie Reynolds near-buzzer beater that catapulted Villanova to its first Final Four since 1985.

9. Duke 98, Maryland 96 (OT) -- Regular season, 2001

With 54 seconds left, the Terps held a 10-point lead over the No. 2 Blue Devils. Fourteen seconds later, the lead was two, thanks to eight points from Jason (don't call him Jay) Williams. Duke eventually tied it up and the game went to overtime where, amazingly, Maryland didn't fold and had a chance to win at the end. I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the catalyst for the comeback: a bogus fifth foul on Steve Blake, who had blanketed Williams on defense all night.

8. Connecticut 79, Duke 78 -- National semifinal, 2004 NCAA tournament

Duke led by eight with four minutes to go, but UConn scored 12 straight to close out the game (save for a garbage-time 3 by Chris Duhon). Emeka Okafor scored 18 points in the second half after sitting for nearly the entire first session because of two quick fouls.

7. Oklahoma State 64, St. Joseph's 62 -- Regional final, 2004 NCAA tournament

Never before had a No. 1 seed been as disrespected as St. Joe's, but the 30-1 squad came within a jumpshot of the Final Four.

6. Gonzaga 109, Michigan State 106 (3OT) -- Regular season, 2005

Even though it took place the day before Thanksgiving in a small gym in Maui, this game had all the intensity of a Final Four contest and was played even better. Jim O'Connell wrote for The Associated Press after the game: "If the game was played in March instead of late November, it would have gone down as one of the sport's all-time classics. It still should."

5. George Mason 86, Connecticut 84 (OT) -- Regional final, 2006 NCAA tournament

It had already bested Michigan State and North Carolina. Nobody really thought George Mason could continue its magical run against Connecticut, another college basketball powerhouse, one that had entered March as the No. 1 team in the land. Surely UConn would realize it couldn't take Mason lightly and overrun the Patriots with its superior talent, right? Right??

4. UCLA 73, Gonzaga 71 -- Regional semifinal, 2006 NCAA tournament

A transcript of Gus Johnson's call of the final 15 seconds of the game:

And a steal! Farmar! Inside! The freshman ... up and ... (unintelligible) they go in front! Ravio! Last chance to dance. OH WHAT A GAME!!! WHAT. A. GAME! UCLA! UNBELIEVABLE! AFTER BEING DOWN BY 17, HEARTBREAK CITY!

And then Adam Morrison cried.

3. Syracuse 127, Connecticut 117 (6 OT) -- Quarterfinal, 2009 Big East tournament

The headline here on The Dagger read: "This is why we love college hoops." Couldn't have said it better myself.

2. Kansas 75, Memphis 68 (OT) -- National championship, 2008 NCAA tournament

All season long people wondered whether the free-throw shooting ability (or lack thereof) would be the undoing of a one-loss Memphis team. They were right. Derrick Rose and Chris Douglas-Roberts missed 4 of 5 attempts from the line in the game's final 90 seconds, which allowed Mario Chalmers to hit the game-tying 3 with 2.1 seconds on the clock. After that, the Jayhawks rocked and chalked with ease in the extra session.

1. Illinois 90, Arizona 89 (OT) -- Regional final, 2005 NCAA tournament

It was the wildest comeback the NCAA tournament has ever seen. Down 15 with four minutes to go, No. 1 seed Illinois stormed back to send its Elite Eight matchup with Arizona to overtime. The game had been tight through the first 30 minutes before the Wildcats pulled away, seemingly on their way to the Final Four. But some Deron Williams heroics saved the Illini, who would go on to lose in the finals to North Carolina, possibly becoming the best team of the decade to not win the title.

I remember watching #1 while on vacation in San Antonio. I was rooting for Arizona like crazy because a.) I like Arizona b.) I hate Illinois c.) I would have won my pool most likely if UofA would have won. Luckily as a DePaul alum I can at least see our crappy logo whenever I see highlights of this game.

I'm partial (reasonably unbiased) to the Vermont-Syracuse NCAA First Round game in 2004. Another of Gus Johnson's classic calls.

I had the privilege of sitting courtside for #1. Awesome game to watch and be at. Terrible game to cover for the KC Star (it finished about 10 minutes after the early Sunday deadline.) I can still hear the ringing in my ears as I walked to the parking lot after the game.

2002 NCAA 2nd Round - Indiana vs. Duke should be on here. IU made an improbable comeback in the 2nd half against a monster Duke squad that ended with Jay Williams' 3 and foul when he missed the free throw and AJ Moye blocked Carlos Boozer for the tip in win. 74-73 I believe.

For comeback #4 -- Gus Johnson is quoted here as saying: "And a steal! Farmar! Inside! The freshman ... up and ... (unintelligible) they go in front! Ravio! Last chance to dance. OH WHAT A GAME!!! WHAT. A. GAME! UCLA! UNBELIEVABLE! AFTER BEING DOWN BY 17, HEARTBREAK CITY!"
First off, Gust Johnson is a pimp. He can make a Raiders-Bills game sound exciting.
Secondly, the "(unintelligible)" part is clearly him saying "OH!!! And they go in front!"
Gus Johnson may scream at the most mundane things in life like it's an atom bomb explosion going off 10 feet away...but the man is never, ever unintelligible. You have to squint your eyes and listen if you want to soak in every sound of the genius that is Gus Jeezy, the best announcer of the 21st Century. Bust it, Gus!

Underneath the net for #10. Luckily on the right side of fandom for that one. List seems pretty solid...not sure about St. Joes vs. OSU game but I'll take your guys word for it.
NatsCaps: VCU over Duke barely even makes top 50 upsets of the past decade let alone best games.

2005 West Virgnia vs. Louisville in the Elite Eight. WVU was up 20, hitting all kinds of awkward 3s. Louisville battled back to force OT and then went on to win.

How can Texas and Oklahoma State's triple overtime game ( Feb 27, 2008) not make the list? There were amazing plays throughout, last second shots, and a center hitting a 3 after going between his legs with a guard on him?!

MSU/Kentucky 2005 Elite Eight should be there- MSU won in double ot, and the game was a battle all the way through. Sparks hit the shot at the end that hung on the rim and dropped in. MSU showed the heart and toughness they are known for under Izzo and got the win in OT.

What about Maryland pulling off an upset in Chapel Hill 2 Years ago in OT? That was some game!
Why isn't that on the list?

Idickmey4, I WAS WAITING FOR THAT ON HERE! I remember watching that game, and saying, "all they have to do is let him take a shot." And of course they foul (similarly I joked about Jerome Bettis fumbling at the goal line in Indy before Superbowl XL, then nearly puked in my mouth as it happened a mintue later). I still can't believe he missed the free throw, but as a duke hater, i'm still glad.

Ok, 2003; regular season game: Miami vs. #1 Conneticut. Emeka Okefor and Ben Gordan... running all over the Canes... but Darius Rice (remember him?!) is going bananas, finishes with something like 43 points! Anyway, Miami down by 6 with 20 seconds left. Make a basket, foul the guy.... misses the shot.... and then, inexplicably.... the Miami guard goes uncontested for a layup... except now there is 2 seconds left and your team is still down by 2. Conneticut inbounds the ball right to Darius Rice... who basically catches and shoots from 36 feet away. Swish! Buzzer....
All of us fans are sitting there.... and for the first second... honestly..... no celebration. We had NO idea what just happened. And then.......... Holy COW!!!! THIS is why they play college basketball!!!!!!!!!

How is a game that was won fairly easily in OT considered to be #2. By the way, where is VCU upsetting Duke in the first round of the NCAA tournament a few years ago? That was classic. How are there no UNC games on here? The 6 OT game should be #1. That was one of the greatest sporting events I've ever seen, much less college basketball.

Not usually one to post on this because there's lots of different valid opinions, but I am quite surprised that the MSU vs Kentucky 2005 tourney game that went into overtime because of the rim dancing 3-pointer isn't mentioned. Big game!

The Maryland-Duke Final 4 Meeting (Duke trails by 22 early but comes back en route to the title, same year as #9) and the Maryland-Duke ACC Semifinal (Maryland leads early by double digits, then trails by double digits, comes back to tie on a Blake 3 but then loses on a tip-in by Nate James when Dixon's heave from mid-court hit the iron, also in 2001) should all be in a group. And you might as well throw in Maryland's win at Durham in 2001.

How funny, Chris, that even in a list meant to celebrate basketball, you can't let your bitterness to Duke slide even an iota. The "bogus fifth foul" was anything but.
Anyway, GMU/UConn should be atop the list. Period. It is what college hoops is all about.
