The Dagger - NCAAB

Little secret: The Dagger doesn't know much about recruiting. Five stars is good, I guess? But that's of course why the basketball gods invented Rivals. They know you want your recruiting information, and they want you to be happy.

This isn't exactly a breaking story, then, but it is worth a quick notation: Apparently, Tim Hardaway -- he of the UTEP two-step and the NBA career and unfortunate public opinions about homosexuals -- has a son. This son, as you might imagine, plays basketball. This son, Tim Hardaway, Jr., was a three-star recruit fielding offers from a variety of schools. This son has officially chosen one of those schools. This son is attending Michigan. (I have no idea why I just wrote that paragraph that way. Sorry.)

Hardaway is 6-foot-5 -- a good bit taller than his dad, actually -- and is best known for his three-point shot. UMHoops.com calls Hardaway a "lanky shooting guard with excellent length who is a great three point shooter. He’s not as athletic as Casey Prather and his offensive game isn’t as refined as Trey Zeigler’s but there is no doubt that he is the best shooter of the bunch."

For Michigan coach John Beilein, the signing makes a ton of sense. These are the types of players Beilein loves. He wants to spread the floor and take a lot of threes and he wants players that can do so without also being vertically disadvantaged. You'd be surprised how many super-athletic mid-size wings don't have a perimeter jump shot, and how highly so many of those guys are rated by recruiters every year. If Beilein could grab those guys, surely he would, but in the meantime getting tallish guards with three-point range is just fine. Only a couple years in, Beilein's Michigan team is absorbing his philosophy in overt ways. Michigan fans have every right to be encouraged.

Plus, maybe Tim Hardaway Sr. will come to some of your games now. Ask the Indiana fans who lived through the Patrick Ewing, Jr. era: that's actually kind of cool.
