The face of a man about to make everyone run until they puke.
We've already covered Louisville's basically stunning loss to Western Kentucky on Sunday via the magic of Kige Ramsey. (Three times, actually. Still working on that triple-post issue. Bear with us.) Perhaps no one was more stunned about the loss than Rick Pitino, who, if Louisville's shooting numbers are any indication, was forced to sit idly by on the sidelines without recourse and watch as his team clanged their way to an early-season upset.
Pitino isn't idling any more. Today, he released an apology to his fans via his personal web site, which included a pretty honest breakdown of the team's struggles and some stimulating angry coach-talk that fans always like to hear after a rough loss. To wit:
Sorry fans you deserve better.
Our offense was to create ball movement and attack inside. Keep our challenged shots under five. We were 0-12 on challenged shots and our assist total was 8. I’ve had disappointing losses but none more disappointing than this one. Lets not take a single thing away from a better team that night. Western played with great purpose. There 1,2, and 3 men totaled 27 rebounds. Four of our guards Andre, Will, Edgar and Jerry totaled 61 minutes and grabbed 0 rebounds.
Defensively, our press could not be much of a factor due to our absurd 26.8% shooting percentage. Our 24 deflections total did not help either. Our bigs did a poor job of blitzing the pick and role allowing WKU to shoot 50.0% in the second half.
In other seasons we could point to injuries or suspensions early on which led to our demise. Now it is very simple. Practice habits create a winning formula. We did not earn the victory. WKU earned that one. They should be congratulated. Very few players can practice without purpose or intensity and suddenly bring it game night. Although Iverson maybe the exception from what is rumored. But then again his record since joining the Pistons is 6-6 and there are no Allen Iversons walking through the YUM! Center.
Good to see Pitino can still please a crowd with the old "X Player is not walking through that door!" line. I love it.
If I was anyone else involved with Louisville basketball, I would not love it so much. Were I to hear my coach, who happens to be Rick Pitino, publicly saying things like "We will change our practice habits immediately," I'm just going to assume that I'm going to be running a lot of wind sprints. Not a lot of wind sprints by basketball standards. A lot of wind sprints by U.S. track team standards. Iron Man wind sprints. Wind sprints to make you question the existence of God. Those kind of wind sprints.
Should be lots of fun.
