The Dagger - NCAAB

Rick Pitino actually seems to like Christian Laettner.

That's hard to believe when you consider the events of March 28, 1992:

Kentucky vs. Duke East Regional Final ... Pitino's Wildcats are on the verge of a Final Four berth until Grant Hill throws a bomb to Laettner all the way down the floor. The Duke senior turns, shoots, and the rest is history ...

Duke goes on to win another National Championship, while Pitino and company are left to wonder what might have been.

You've seen the highlights a million times at this point. So have Pitino and Laettner.

"I'm always reminded of [Laettner's shot]," Pitino told me last week. "Every March Madness it's shown constantly. When March comes around I'll see Christian make that shot ... I've now seen it 1100 times."

Over the years, Pitino has come to grips with the outcome, which might explain why he and Laettner spent last Thursday afternoon together in Louisville.

The duo was busy filming a video, as part of a promotional campaign for Vitamin Water and the NCAA called "Revive to Survive," in which fans can submit their own re-creations of famous tournament moments for the chance to win a trip to the Final Four.

In the video, which is scheduled to hit the Internet some time next week, Laettner re-enacts "the shot" in different present day situations while Pitino helplessly looks on. "I don't know if I could have done this [video] when I was at Kentucky because they never would have forgiven me," Pitino admitted. "It's a lot easier to laugh with Christian than just relive that shot; a sense of humor is very good at my age."

That sense of humor must have been on full display during the shoot, especially when you consider it was just the second time the two men had seen each other since the former Blue Devil lifted his team to victory.

For Laettner, "that shot" has become a daily source of conversation for almost anyone he comes into contact with. "It's the thing that people talk to me the most about," he says of his 15-foot buzzer beater.  "My family and close friends, they don't bring it up very often, but any time a stranger or someone I don't know approaches me or wants to say something, it's always the thing that they mention."

The constant notoriety may wear on Laettner sometimes, but he appreciates how special the recognition is. "It's kind of like part of my life that I have to put up with, but I never get sick of it," he said. "99% percent of the time people say complimentary things, or that was the greatest shot ever, so I enjoy it."

While the final outcome wasn't what Pitino wanted, he realized very quickly what a special game he had participated in. "You go home very upset when you lose because you're out of the tournament," he said. "I guess it was about three days later, I watched the tape of the game and I had a totally different perspective on it. It was such a well-played game, by both teams. It was a high-scoring game where both coaches just let the talent showcase their skills at the highest level; it was really just a great game to watch and be a part of."

As our phone conversation rolled along, it became apparent that both men still hold a special place in their hearts for that game. "What I remember most about that game was that we were a powerhouse," Laettner said. "Duke was a powerhouse, and the Kentucky team was a very well-coached team that had some local Kentucky kids on the team. No one kind of expected them to be there ... they were the underdog, we were the favorites. I think that's why it touches such a part [of fans' emotions]."

The emotions from that game at the Spectrum continue to run strong to this day. Pitino is convinced that most Kentucky fans still haven't gotten over the fact that Laettner's shot went through the net. "Walking away from that moment, and watching all the facial expressions, as they captured it on the sidelines, there was a lot to it, a lot of emotion to that game," Pitino said. "I don't think Kentucky fans will ever get over it, because they constantly talk about it."

They aren't the only ones.

Every basketball fan I know still talks about that shot; it may go down as the greatest shot in the history of college basketball. “As long as the TV is around, and as long as the Internet is around, and the NCAA Tournament, I think people will be seeing this play and that game -- Duke-Kentucky 1992 -- for a long time," Laettner said. "It doesn't bother me every March when it rolls around ... it's a pleasure to be a part of it and it's something that I'll always treasure."

wonder why no one ever mentions that laetner should have been tossed out of the game prior to taking that shot, for stomping on the chest of a Kentucky player, who was laying flat on his back. hmmm.

I'm a North Carolina alum. But the things Laettner, Bobby Hurley and Grant Hill did with Duke in the early 90s deserves nothing but respect. Our Carolina teams struggled with these talented and well coached guys just like every other college team in that era. To refer to Laettner, Hurley, Hill or any other Duke player of that time as punks; well just one word of advice, grow up! Admire these guys for their skill, tenacity and will to win.

Jay T. you need to get a handle on things my God 17 years is it that bad for you ? You need to face the facts that considering what was riding on the game , it was a pressure clutch shot by one of Duke's all time greats - end of story !!!! Don't worry though if your the die-hard Kentucky fan you seem to be , you paid us back by recruiting Patrick Patterson, Duke put all their eggs in one basket for him- another Buck Williams and your program riuned this kids hopes, Kentucky 's programs isn't a tenth of what it used to be - Go Duke !!! We will kick Kentucky's rear end every year we play you guys but the problem is , that 'll never happen because your too busy playing cupcakes.

Thank You Ed C. for your candid honesty and exposing Jay T. for what he is, or should I say " what he isn't ", by the way will you please tell Hansbough that there is no way the NCAA is going to let him stay another year. Damn, that guy has kicked our butts, but I admire his work ethics and say congragulations when he beats J.J. record, he earned the hard way !

To the Carolina Alumni a few spots up,
Your respect for what the Duke players have accomplished in the early 90's speaks volume about the class your institution represents throughout the country. I look forward to the Duke/Carolina game twice a year (maybe 3 with the ACC tourney) just as you do but the older you get the more respect you have for program your battling. I have been a Duke fan since '81 or '82 and at an early age you hate everything that exists with the other team, especially when it comes to Duke/Carolina. I have learned to repect more than ever the Carolina program because of the pure class that school represents. I hope Roy and Mike battle for at least another decade or more. It is the best game of the year in any sport for anyone associated with anything near the state of North Carolina. Back to "The Shot". One of those moments in life you will will never forget where you were. Nuff said. Go Duke!

I was 9 or 10 when I watched that game. Duke was 1 of the first college teams I watched so I gotta root for them. They had a dream team next to the fab 5 from michigan another team I admire. Christan L. is a great guy that game went down in history and will always have a piece of my heart.

Jeff P---We played North Carolina this year and for the past few years. Are you calling them cupcakes? Florida won two national championships and we play them twice a year. Are you calling them cupcakes? Cmon man don't hate because Duke will never lead the nation in most ever wins. That is a battle between UK and UNC.

That nearly full court pass should never have been allowed to reach Laetner. Pitino should have fronted him with his best leaper - Jamal Mashburn.

Great article. Great Game. Great Shot. Big coaching mistake! Don't guard the ball on the throw in? What happened to going after a live ball in the air? The Kentucky players looked like they were standing in cement. Sure Pitino can laugh about it because he wants to laugh about it since he wants forgotten his mistakes as a coach. For those KY boys to play so great, the story should be the failure of Coach Pitino to win the game with his coaching strategies along with the great shot from Christian Laettner. He didn't miss a shot from the field or the foul line that day. How often does that happen?

    Jeff P,
UNC is 21-10 versus Kentucky head-to-head all-time and UNC has five national championship (4 NCAA and 1 before the NCAA was formed). UK has 7 national titles (all since NCAA was formed). I'd say our titles stack up pretty well; and our record against UK speaks for itself! Why don't you UK whimps join a REAL basketball conference like the ACC and face some real competition. The SEC is a football conference...always will be. Florida's titles were a fluke and they played cupcakes all year. None of their paths through the NCAA Tournament or UK's have crossed with UNC. The Tar Heels would have stopped those title bids from ever happening. Tell ya what...why don't UK and FSU just swap conferences? Or Miami? LOL

That is what makes Duke and Kentucky great -- all the classic tournament battles. Please, Coach K, sanction a home-and-home just once, for all of us! Make It So! And Duke was only up 18 in that game. That was on K -- an unbelievable case of burning his timeouts too soon. Even he'll admit it. But don't worry, you got yours, we got ours... here's to great basketball, eh?

Mashburn couldn't have possibly fronted Laettner. Mashburn was on the bench with 5 fouls. Kentucky's next tallest player was 6'7" (Pelphrey & Feldhaus, neither of which were good jumpers). Chrissy is 6'11". Pitino didn't want to risk a foul. And you know the refs would have called it.

U of K has 9 national titles counting the NIT titles we won before the NCAA tourny. Laettner should have been ejected from the game for unsportsman like conduct and how does an inside player not pic up a 5th foul playing almost 20 min after getting 4 in 35? This game was all about image and Duke was the NCAA image that yr. Oh just so everyone knows....UK also has a team that won an Olymipic Gold medal....no team ever won an NCAA a Gold medal and a Pro championship....UK's starting 5 in 58 did.
