In yet another sign of the sheer and utter ridiculousness of the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll, the coach who voted North Carolina #1 in the preseason, then switched his vote to Connecticut for last week's poll, has once again placed the Tar Heels atop his ballot in the poll released this afternoon.
Carolina was a unanimous #1 in the preseason coaches poll. After a decisive victory over Pennsylvania, the Heels were dropped to #2 on one ballot last week. Why? It's anybody's guess. It's not like UConn did anything special enough to warrant jumping Carolina. Conversely, Carolina didn't do anything special enough to warrant jumping Connecticut this week. If the Huskies were #1 last week, why wouldn't that coach think they were #1 this week? Was the win over La Salle that much to change his mind? Did he think that UNC's handling of a Kentucky team that had just lost to VMI was enough to vault them to #1?
Sadly, USA Today no longer seems to be running their endlessly fascinating feature that listed every coach's weekly ballots, so the identity of this capricious voter is unknown. We're certain that this will be the first of many absurd shenanigans in the useless poll of college coaches. And Poll Dancing will be back when they do to chronicle them all.
