The
game happened on Saturday, but it had somehow slipped off of my radar until now.
Evidently, this past weekend, some Oregon State players challenged some
Washington players to a fight in a hotel parking lot.
That's a brilliant move. In fact, I was just reading about that in John Wooden's
book. It was discussed in Chapter 9, "What to do when you suck at
basketball, have little else to live for, and would like to drag somebody down
with you, you ignorant Beaver, you."
Apparently, the nonsense started when a few Oregon State players showed up for
practice on their home court, just as Washington was leaving the floor. Some
words were exchanged and tempers flared, but it never got physical.
But later, a bunch of Beavers decided that this aggression could not stand, man.
They got together in the parking lot where the Huskies were staying, and Beavers
forward Marcel Jones sent a text to Washington guard Joel Smith, asking if the
Huskies wanted to come down and fight.
They didn't. Smith snitched to his head coach Lorenzo Romar, who then got in
touch with Oregon State, and nothing happened.
Certainly, any Oregon State player involved in this acted childish and ignorant,
but there is a certain logic to it. After the Huskies left the floor, I
imagine something like the following conversation too place:
Player 1: They disrespected our home floor, man! We've gotta do something
about this!
Player 2: Yeah! They have to pay!
Player 1: We'll just come out fired up for this game, and we'll beat
their ass on the court!
Player 2: YEAH!
Player 1: BEAVER PRIDE, BABY!
Player 3: Hey, fellas?
Player 1: What up, dog? You ready to throw down?
Player 3: You know we're 0-13, right? We're not going to beat anybody.
Player 1: Oh yeah.
Player 2: Dammit.
Player 1: I know! WE'LL FIGHT THEM IN A PARKING LOT!
Player 2: WOOOOOOO! KILL, KILL, KILL! BEAVER PRIDE!
Player 3: (shakes head)
There was no fight, and Oregon State lost later that night by 38. Beaver Pride
is at an all-time low.
