The Dagger - NCAAB

NCAA Riches to NBA Rags is The Dagger's countdown of the best college basketball players who went on to have disappointing NBA careers. For an explanation of the criteria used in compiling this list, check out our introductory entry. Today we reach No. 6: Lionel Simmons of LaSalle.

On a list of famous Lionels, former LaSalle star Lionel Simmons would be far down the rankings, below Ritchie, Messi, Barrymore and even Hutz. A majority of college basketball fans under 30 have probably never heard his name. A majority of college basketball fans over 30 have probably long forgotten it. But in 1990, Lionel Simmons was the best player in the land.

As a senior, Simmons was the consensus national player of the year after leading LaSalle to a 30-2 record and a No. 4 seed in the NCAA tournament. (They lost in the second round to Clemson.) The L-Train, as he was known, led the country in scoring that season and finished his career as the third most prolific scorer in NCAA history (behind only Pete Maravich and Freeman Williams). He still holds the NCAA record for most consecutive games scoring in double figures (115). And only five players had more rebounds than his 1,429.

LaSalle hasn't made the NCAA tournament since the year after Simmons graduated, but the Explorers have a rich basketball tradition going back to its national title in 1954. Simmons was the third LaSalle player to win national player of the year honors, which ties the Big 5 school for third all-time behind Duke and Ohio State (and tied, amazingly, with UCLA).

Simmons went No. 7 in the 1990 NBA draft and had a solid start to his career with Sacramento, earning all-Rookie honors and averaging over 15 points per game in his first four years in the league. But injuries killed his production and by 1997 he was out of the NBA.

NCAA Riches to NBA Rags countdown:

No. 6 -- Juan Dixon

No. 7 -- Billy Owens

No. 8 -- J.R. Reid

No. 9 -- Adam Morrison

No. 10 -- Danny Ferry

Lionel Simmons passes to the man, Rodney shoots the 3 and "BOOM" goes the dynamite. Simmons shined like an old vintage car and is forever remembered in the classic All In The Family tune, "gee that old LaSalle (Simmons) ran great.....those were the days!" And now you know the rest of the story....good day! Discuss!

to quote Johnny McEnroe...you can not be serious. Alcindor and Walton combined have 5 NPOY..according to the knowing wizards of wikipedia, the trophy named "the big O" is the longest running men's individual award:

Most embarrassing injury in NBA history - Nintendonitis, suffered by Lionel Simmons. Laughed my butt off when that happened so long ago with the Kings.

I hardly call Lionel Simmons a rags story...15 points a game isnt bad and it was injrury.....jason williams should be on the list then..
Also Juan Dixon was a great player in college but he wasnt that great in college nor that bad in pros to be on this list. To me this is a "lazy" researched list.

Is it me are there too many Philly guys on this list? how about Jerome Pooh Richardson. Often referred to as the next Magic Johnson, never became an even decent pro. And as a Temple alum I would also have to include Mark Macon.

this list is crap. LTrain had 4 yrs over 15ppg....that's not a bust. A bust is someone who is out immediately because of a lack of talent, not because of an injury or injuries. Laettner isn't a bust, he played for years. Sure he wasn't an mvp but he was serviceable for a long time. And trust me, nobody hates him more than me.

Lionel Simmons was pretty good before his injury problems. His 2nd year he averaged 17 pts, 8 reb, 4 ast, 1.7 stl, and 1.7 blk. His career highs include two 19 rebound games, one game with 13 assists, three games with 6 steals, and one game with 7 blocks.

this is a horrible list and the guy who wrote it has no knowledge of basketball history.
Laettner played for over a decade and made millions. He shouldnt even be on this list, and believe me, I am not a fan of his.
How about CHRIS WASHBURN??? anyone ever hear of him? Well he was supposedly the next Bill Russell when he was at NC State. How about STANLEY ROBERTS??? I mean BOBBY HURLEY should be on this list way before Laettner.
Did this guy even do any research before making this list?

Lionel Simmons shouldn't be this top ten list he played a good solid 4 season plus 3 more limit minutes on the injury reserve list with SAC-Town .There many other players that should be on the list that didn't even last 4 season or more or played 4 season in league before injuries there are many other players that should be on the list besides this guy and many more!!!!!!!! If player put in a few good years more than flash on the a NBA team roster before injuries takes over then they shouldn't necessary be on the list other factors should be consider.
