The Dagger - NCAAB

NCAA Riches to NBA Rags is The Dagger's countdown of the best college basketball players who went on to have disappointing NBA careers. For an explanation of the criteria used in compiling this list, check out our introductory entry. Today, we start off our list with No. 10: Duke's Danny Ferry.

There's no such thing as a bad 13-year career in the NBA but considering all the hype that accompanied Danny Ferry's arrival in the league, his might come close. After being one of the most heralded high school and college players of his time, Ferry was little more than a role player during his professional career in Cleveland and San Antonio. He was expected to be an All-Star staple, but rode the bench for most of his playing days, starting just 11 times in his first five seasons.

Ferry was a prep legend at Dematha, the D.C.-area basketball powerhouse coached by basketball legend Morgan Wootoon. After leading the Stags to USA Today's mythical national high school championship in 1985, he became the object of an intense recruiting battle between Tobacco Road rivals Duke and North Carolina. Ferry, of course, chose Duke and ended up becoming the first in a long line of tall, white Duke superstars who were loathed by most of the college basketball public. If George Washington is the Father of our Country, Ferry is the Father of the Floorslappers. He begat Christian Laettner, who begat Cherokee Parks, who begat Josh McRoberts, who begat Kyle Singler.

In 1989, Ferry was the best player in college basketball. He earned national player of the year honors on 22 points and seven rebounds per game. His 6'10" frame made him an ideal post player, but he had a shooter's touch, hitting on 43 percent on threes during his senior season. Ferry earned national player of the year honors ths year and was on the final Olympic basketball team comprised solely of amateur players in 1988. (Their bronze medal was said to provide the impetus for the rule change that allowed for professionals to play basketball in the Summer Games.) Duke made three Final Fours during Ferry's career.

When they drafted him with the No. 2 overall pick in 1989, the Los Angeles Clippers envisioned an All-Danny (Ferry and Manning, the No. 1 pick in 1988) frontcourt leading them out of the basketball doldrums. But Ferry refused to sign with Donald Sterling's team and instead played in Italy for one season before he was able to orchestrate a trade to Cleveland (where he is now the GM).

In retrospect, it's easy to say that Ferry's game wasn't going to translate well to the pros. His versatility might have masked the fact that he wasn't dominant at any specific part of the game, his size wasn't as much of an advantage in the NBA ... all the stuff people say about a bust. But at the time, Ferry was thought to be a sure-thing in the league.

Jim Valvano once praised Ferry's basketball IQ (which was instilled in him not just by his two Hall of Fame coaches, but by his father, who played 10 seasons in the NBA and was the GM for the Washington Bullets), by saying that, "the pro stuff ... he knows it all." He might have known it all, but he couldn't show it on the court.

Ninety-nine percent of college basketball players would kill to have Danny Ferry's NBA career. I doubt Danny Ferry is one of them.

My high school football coach used to tell us, "I don,t mind if you play the piano, just don't carry it on your back". No quickness, no speed, that's why he was an extremely wealthy bench warmer. Who says that Duke education didn't pay off!

If George Washington is the Father of our Country, Ferry is the Father of the Floorslappers. Oh my God, that is funny! Another good one Chris! Those crappy floorslappers are a joke to everyone outside of the cesspool that is durham.

Why critcize a man that plyed 13, also I would not say the Duke education was a failure. The man is now the GM for the Cleveland Cavaliers and incase you don't know... They had the best record in the NBA!

Hey genius, Mark Alarie preceded Ferry at Duke and was the starting F/C on the NCAA finalist in 1986. Alarie did not have the outside shooting presence that Ferry brought to Duke, which I recall what made Ferry such a big dealio coming out of high school. Duke was not yet in the "loathsome" territory in 1986...
Smart though...refusing to sign with the Clippers. Who would argue that logic ?!?

Wow, A failure in the NBA?? I think Not, sure Ferry wasn't Bird like the hype EVERYONE gets when entering the pros, but he has put together a pretty good team in Cleveland. Bring mark Price back and they may win a title! Haha

Danny Ferry was garbage in the nba and he didnt win the ring the team he played on did. He played 13 years as a benchwarmer that sucks but he is rich and smart and the man in Cleveland.

Are all you posters kidding? Do any of you know Danny Ferry's history in the league? Danny Ferry should be at the top of the list. He has destroyed the Cavliers franchise twice: once as a player, and now as the GM. The Cavs gave away Ron Harper. Harper was a much better NBA player than Ferry. The Cavs also gave Ferry a gigantic 10 year guaranteed contract. This contract handcuffed the cavs for a decade! You don't give that kind of contract to a bench player.
What has Ferry accomplished as GM? Without Lebron, Danny Ferry and Mike Brown are still looking for other jobs. Danny has had Lebron for six years and still hasn't put a team around him.

He deserves to be on the list because of how hyped he was, you couldn't read anything else his last 2 years at Duke except journalists singing his praises. If you didn't get to watch his games with the Cavs every night you didn't get to see why he was ineffective in the NBA: He was a marked man. The NBA was superpi$$ed that a player had the audacity to suggest that any NBA team wasn't worthy, even if it was the trainwreck Clippers. When Ferry got back from Italy, the NBA execs made an example of him. They made sure he didn't touch the ball without getting a foul called on him. He was constantly in early foul trouble and like any player, it changed how he could play. He was the message board for future draft picks and the message was clear: Deny any NBA team and go to Europe, you can FORGET about EVER coming back to the NBA and getting anything but railroaded. Doubt me? Look at how many players balked about the sucky teams that drafted them.....but played on them anyway in the next 12 years after Ferry came back. No high profile picks ever left for europe again, even if they didn't get the lesson, their agents did and made sure no one else was given the 'Ferry Treatment'.

Danny Ferry has had Lebron james for 6 years and didn't win a championship, therefor he is the worst GM of all time. If I was lebron I'd bolt next year, and I'm sure he will. I'm surprised Ferry wasnt higher on this list as a player too.

You are a fool, T.M. Grant helped resurrect Detroit after the Isaiah years, first with his play, then with the King's ransom he brought back from the Magic. The Pistons went on to become a perennial power in the East (again).
The fact that he had injury problems after that point is irrelevant. The guy made a big impact in the league. From Wikipedia:
"After the first six seasons of his career, before his ankle injury, Hill had a total of 9,393 points, 3,417 rebounds and 2,720 assists. Oscar Robertson and Larry Bird are the only two players in league history to eclipse these numbers after their first six seasons."
That's some terrible company, eh T.M.?

Ferry had ok career..snubbing the Clippers and going overseas hurt him..as far as being GM of Cavs, he's doing great..Cleveland was the worst franchise in professional sports PERIOD before LeBron..now they had the best record in basketball..LeBron was MVP..Mike Brown was Coach of the Year..Ferry was Executive of the Year..as far as him not giving LeBron a good supporting cast..that's not true..they just keep giving away players for the wrong reasons........They had Drew Gooden , Carlos Boozer , Larry Hughes , Shannon Brown..those guys would have made Cleveland an awesome lineup this year..Now they just added Shaq for 2 bench players and cash......starting lineup still intact coming off the leagues best record plus adding the biggest bully in the game....when healthy Shaq is still a beast..he commands a double team..he willbring inside intensity to that team.....JACKPOT !!!!
