The Dagger - NCAAB

Don't fill out more than one of these. The Colonel sees you. The Colonel knows.

It's that time again. That two-day respite between the conference tournaments and Selection Sunday, and the actual NCAA tournament. It's the calm before the storm. It's also when you need to figure out who you like going where in what bracket, and how you're going to be certain, positively certain, that North Carolina is going to win it all and that Western Kentucky is upsetting Illinois and so on and so forth. Now's your time, so make it count.

As you go bracket-filling, though, I -- and by extension we here at The Dagger -- have but one request. Actually, "request" isn't the right word. I have one command, which you must obey: Fill out one bracket.

That's right. Fill out one bracket. Use it for all your pools. No exceptions, and no excuses. Be a man, or a woman, or whatever you are, and make your picks and deal with the results.

Why? First of all, because doing the opposite is impractical and annoying. I want to talk to you about your bracket. I am a college basketball fan, and I'm interested in discussing college basketball with you, and anyway, you work down the hall from me and you always have your headphones on so I figure hey, sure, the NCAA tournament will provide an easy conversation piece. Let's chat. Then I ask you what your Final Four is, and you list anywhere from eight-to-10 different teams, with various contingency plans for each. I can't keep track of that, and you've ruined this conversation. And now we both have no excuse to avoid work. See what you've done here?

But more important than that is integrity. Sure, it's fun to go all willy-nilly and pick every single possible combination of teams. It might even save you from embarrassment in your office pool. But that slight outward embarrassment you would have for losing to your office's token non-sports fan will be overshadowed by the crushing, devastating shame you feel at subverting the honest and good and American process of picking one basketball team over another, and then momentarily rooting for that team with all your heart, because your bracket depends on it.

This is my one rule. Usually, you're free to enjoy sports however you please; I respect your rights as a sports fan. I don't even mind that you just started caring about college basketball yesterday. Your choice. (Though I do hope you come back to The Dagger in the offseason!) But this time, look deep inside yourself, meditate, and make the right decision. You know I'm right. Take your time, fill it out, and be excited about it, until it all comes crashing down on Thursday morning.

One bracket. One bracket to rule them all. Now get out there and be somebody.

As though spaeketh for the Commonwealth of Bracketologists I hereby shamefully apoligizeth to thee. I shall now correct my picking upon which I shall have only one bracket. I am verry sorry.

i've filled out one and only one bracket for the last couple of years now...yes, it decreases my chance at winning some money somewhere, but it increases my chance to win a bunch of money everywhere. Not to mention, with one bracket, it makes the tournament so much more fun to watch...it's very cut and dry. "Oh, ok, here is a 7/10 game that i've picked the 10 team to win." Simple. If you have three brackets with the 10 team winning in two of them, well, that game isn't as much fun to watch now because 33% of you really doesn't care if you get the upset right or not. So...yeah, one bracket is the only way to fly.

I'll admit it... I used to fill out about 3 or 4 brackets a year but this year I'm following The Dagger philosophy and sticking with one and only one bracket for all pools. Thanks Dagger for showing me the light!

I'm interested to see how USC will do in the tournament. They're a team with a lot of potential but are very inconsistent. Demar Derozan is ridiculously athletic, but should stay another year to develop.

I fill out a ton of brackets and have no problem with it - however, I only fill out one for money, and I put most of my effort into that one, since that's the one that matters.
I'm usually overly optimistic in the online ones, but realistic in the money pool. For example, in all my free brackets I have Pitt winning it all, but in my money bracket I (currently) have us losing to OU in the Final Four

Brackets are such a crap shoot anyway, who cares if you fill out more than one? Now if you want to pretend like you knew what you were doing though, definitely make sure you only fill out one. But at the end of the day, I don't think hardly anybody that truly does well really knew what they were doing anyway.

    Final 4
    Louis_ville
    Memphis
    Floria St.
    Gonzaga.
Gonzaga has the best path, being at home in Portland and also at home in Memphis. As a Memphis native, I sssure you that the plan to fill the seats with pro-Zag rooters is going well.
    Besides, Carolina sucks.
Louisville is good, but Memphis is better. Both teams play the same style, only Memphis is a little bit bigger, a little bit faster. Plus Louis_ville doesn't have anybody to cover 'reke.
Florida State will crush Pitt. A size and speed advantage as well as motivation after dropping a game to them already this season.
The problem with all the Big East teams, (except W.Virgina and Louis_ville) is that they haven't improved over the course of the season. They are not playing any better now then they were in November. So when it comes time to step it up in march, they don't know how.
I'm leaning toward the 'Zags to win it all. The Tiger really spanked them in Seattle. Note that it taught the 'Zags a lesson about intensity and the 'Zags haven't lost since. If Few has figured out a way to deal with 'reke, then the 'Zags will be national champions.

No offense. Who has Memphis played? So ESPN and other media says that they are a great team, ok. But who have they played? UAB? ECU? Tulane? So. Miss? Are you kidding me people? Granted I do not Watch CUSA basketball (and why should I?......Yawn!!!!!), but if you ask me Memphis might be a good team, but they have to show it against teams that are equal to them and not teams like Tulsa or UCF. Hell I probablly could beat those teams by myself. Kids, put down the Memphis Kool-Aid.

    27. I'm not trying to argue with you but it's Memphis style of play that makes them great. They come at their opponents like cannon balls and they won't let up. Since you haven't seen them play then I can give you a good comparison; Louisville. This is the only other team (that I've seen) with a similar playing style. The difference is that Louisville's guards are smaller but they are quick.Yeah, this year has been shaky in the beginning for Memphis and I admit that C-USA is not a great conference but give Memphis a decent chance on the national before you judge.

    26. Reread your post, you are not judging Memphis so disregard my last statement. Sorry! But you do have a legit argument and we just have to wait until the tournament to see.
