The Dagger - NCAAB

Late in the first half of Wednesday's NEC championship game, Mount St. Mary's came out of a timeout for an inbounds play with six players on the court. It was an honest mistake, but while that sort of stuff may fly in the NBA, it didn't get past the game's officials, who promptly whistled The Mount for a technical foul.

That put Robert Morris on the line for two free throws, both of which were converted. When the final buzzer sounded about an hour later, those two free throws provided the exact margin of victory for Robert Morris, which defeated The Mount 48-46 to earn the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.

The score was tied before Dallas Green hit a baseline jumper with 2.5 seconds left after recovering a loose ball. Had the Mountaineers not been whistled for the technical, they may have been defending against a game-tying shot instead of a game-losing one.

Losing by two on a freakish shot with the NCAA tournament on the line is bad enough. Losing by two because somebody can't count is even worse.

They are basketball players, what does being able to count to six have to do with playing ball?

I was glad to see Robert Morris win, but at the same time it hurts to see a team's season end because of something like this. I guess rules are rules.

The bad thing is, that it's the officials' job to count players before the ball is put into play. The ball never should have been given to the in-bounder when there were 11 players on the court. It is correct that the team should have known, but the officials have got to do a better job, especially when a NCAA birth is at stake.

Hey strahanbud(10), the #3 player was the inbounder, and the other 5 on the floor...It's not like
he was waiting to check in.. he was the guy with the ball. T-foul just how it should be.

What a stupid call by the officials. The ball had not yet been put into play so the zebras could have quietly told the MSM coach to take a player off the court. So instead of the game being decided by the players, ultimately an unnecessary call by the officials made the difference. The lack of common sense in this situation is remarkable!

    @ strahanbud
maybe you should look again. #3 is the one who is going to inbound the ball. at this point the ref still has it.
there are 6 players on the court for sure.

    @ armchair sports
common sense? counting to 5 is pretty common as well. maybe the coach should've made sure who knew to go out there. it's a foul in the book for a reason. pay attention to what you're putting on the court and it wont happen.
