The Dagger - NCAAB

It's already been a bad few weeks for Kansas basketball. The Jayhawks' open-campus brawling between football players and a few basketball stars -- which, in addition to being embarrassing (and given the size differences) is a great way to get your basketball stars hurt; just ask Tyshawn Taylor -- was bad enough. That was more than enough for Bill Self, I'm sure.

Add another idiotic mistake to the list of "things destroying Bill Self's stomach lining": Early Saturday morning, Kansas guard Brady Morningstar was arrested suspicion of DWI in Lawrence. He was arrested at 3:25 a.m. and booked into the Douglas County Jail, and he spent a few hours in jail before posting $250 bond at 6:01 a.m. (Ah, the staple of any truly alcoholic night in college: posting a small bond fee as early in the morning as you can. Though it's preferred that you not endanger other peoples' lives when incurring this seminal fine. Usually just stumbling around campus is good enough. A DWI doesn't exactly scream "college!" It just makes you a jerk.)

Self wasted no time in punishing Morningstar, suspending him for Kansas' first semester. He can still practice with the team but can't won't play in any games. Considering Morningstar started nearly every game for the Jayhawks in 2008-09, this is a pretty major loss, though not one Kansas can't overcome.

The real issue here has less to do with Morningstar's decision to drive drunk, insane and regrettable though it may be, than his decision to violate the already-strict team rules Self put in place after last week's fights. What about Self's message didn't get across? What about his discipline didn't seem serious? Or did Self do one of those cool-Dad-who-wants-his-son-to-fight-the-bully routines? Despite all his tough talk, was he too easy on his players?

These are silly questions, I think, but they are the sort of thing you ask when when of your starters is caught fighting football players on campus, is punished and given a strict curfew, and then decides to violate that curfew by driving drunk on a Lawrence expressway. The Jayhawks have a fantastic opportunity to win a national title, just two years after Self won his last, the sort of rebuilding effort only the best coaches at the most elite programs can put together. But his players seem intent on self-sabotage. What's going on here, and why can't Bill Self seem to fix it?

Again, silly question. The Jayhawks will probably be fine. But I and KU fans alike would probably prefer something a little more reassuring than that.

So a backup breaks "strict" teams rules and as punishment gets to watch the soft half of a schedule? I'd hate to see what Bill Self would do to a starter.

Not really a big deal, though he was a starter last year, anyone involved with the program knew that he wouldn't be this year. Actually he was going to be in battle to even have a spot in the 7-9 man rotation Self planned on using with Reed,CJ Henry, EJ and Mario Little.

The point is not based on his contribution to the team, The point is his behavior off the court. A basketball schoolorship could be given to a walk on with the same skill than his un great full drunk ass.

The bench is 11-12 players deep of criminals and thugs who don't deserve a scholarship.
