I can't make it much more plain than that. Buried 10 graphs in this K.C. Star story about Missouri's exhibition opener Thursday night is the rather revelatory fact that Missouri guard Kim English spends his nocturnal hours sleeping in Mizzou Arena. The explanation:

No Missouri basketball player has likely ever spent as much time practicing his game. A year ago English frequently slept at Mizzou Arena, so as to be able to shoot after practice and before class the next day. The practice has been catching. A lot of players are doing the same thing now.

This is insane. Like, it's one thing to be a college athlete, putting in the long morning hours before and after classes, spending basically every waking hour in the gym ... but to spend every sleeping hour in the gym so you can spend more waking hours in the gym borders on the fanatical. I'm almost worried for Kim English. He seems like a very nice, well-rounded young man, and this isn't healthy.

This isn't the first time the Star has written about English's unusual work ethic, either. From last June:

“On my recruiting visit, they told us this was a 24-hour practice facility,” English, a 6-foot-6 freshman guard from Baltimore, said Wednesday. “We’ve got a key and it works at 12 p.m., it works at 1 a.m. It works 24 hours a day.”

English sleeps in a leather chair that he drags from the players’ lounge to the locker room, allowing him to work around the clock. “To help this team win this year, I’ll do anything,” said English. [...] “I’ll sleep outside if that’s what it takes.”

Again, dude, not healthy. But it's also pretty cool, and the sort of thing Missouri fans and notoriously demanding head coach Mike Anderson will appreciate. And hey, maybe English gets a break on room and board. Win, win, and win.

Mad respect to this kid. Hopefully he does his schoolwork too.
And to anyone saying Mizzou should give him a mattress, it would likely violate NCAA rules to encourage or facilitate this type of behavior.

Kim needs no mattress. A chair is just fine for cat naps.

The kid is devoted and loves basketball for sure. I was often in Mizzou's student rec center last year and he was playing pick up games with the common folk almost every day once the season was over. GO TIGERS!

Nice story. How are his grades? If he's spending all that time in the gym, who's doing his classroom work?

... and then he fails all of his classes, and is declared academically ineligible to play basketball for Missouri.

He must have forgotten the memo that he is in college, and should try, even just a little to have an enjoyable college experience. I think a few hours not fully engaged in basketball would help clear up his mind and help him focus better. It isnt healthy what he is doing. You gotta admire his drive and motivation to be the best he can, but if he has the talent, the NBA will still be there, a few hours to enjoy yourself will make life a little less mind numbing.

Come on EB you take a positive and try to make it into a negative, or lame attempt at humor. Sportswriters/bloggers now are just reaching nowadays. This is why sports bloggers and ESPN get on my nerves today reporting things that are more TMZ than sports. Who cares! Let the man get his b-ball on, he could be out doing worse. Geez...

#8... how would this be a violation? The kid's allowed to sleep anywhere he's allowed to be. If it's a 24-hour facility, and it's entirely by his own initiative, then there's no issue.

I've seen some of the (older) Mizzou dorms; sleeping at the gym isn't such a bad idea.

I see some of the comments on here, and I have no wonder as to why this country is where it is. What is wrong with this kid devoting himself to something he absolutely loves and may never get to do again in a few years? Dedication is not a bad thing folks. It's why this country used to be the greatest in the world. Now people are so flighty and haphazard that almost nobody is excellent at anything.
BTW, I understand his grades are good, and I would call extra time on the court earning scholarship.

GUYS ...He probably gets more work done hanging out any place other than his dorm, I mean thisis the kind of thing I did, To escape, don't say the Library! I know at UK it gets crazy at times... But big time props to this Kid and the NCAA should not have a say in this aslong as it is'nt anything organized....Even tho Eric Bledsoe violated a stupid NCAA rule because an assistant mngr was rebounding for him..So with that crowd over at the compliance office you never know..OH YEAH...GO BIG BLUE!!!
