"Miss You" is The Dagger's fond farewell to the players we were super into during their careers and who we will now play off with the help of Keyboard Cat.
If
you've heard of Eric Maynor (and if you're spending your lovely May
afternoon day reading a college basketball blog, I'd wager you have),
then you likely know him primarily because of one shot: "The Duke
Dagger," as Wikipedia calls it,
when VCU upset Duke on Maynor's last-second 20-footer in the 2007 NCAA
tournament. Maynor's performance helped lead to one of the better NCAA
tournament upsets in recent years, and thanks to CBS and Gus Johnson
and everything else NCAA tourney, people will see plenty of Maynor on
highlight reels in years to come.
Maynor's other famous
performance -- his near-singlehanded win over George Mason in the 2007
CAA Championship -- is much more impressive. Both clips are toward the
end of the loving tribute below. You should probably watch them:
In the end, those two games will be Maynor's NCAA legacy, available on YouTube for all eternity, or at least until Google stops ponying up for bandwith. Either way, Maynor is now intertwined with the NCAA tournament forever, one of those players -- the players and teams that come out of nowhere and not only prove they belong, but actually beat the Dukes and UCLAs and Kansases of the world. Maynor isn't the reason the NCAA tournament exists. He is merely a glorious byproduct of it.
(Oh, and so as not to shortchange the young man, it should be noted that Maynor was a very good college player throughout his career. There are differences of opinion on how good he was -- he wasn't the most efficient player in the world in college; statheads tend to think less highly of Maynor than the eye test types -- and it will be interesting to see how his game, more slashy than shooty, translates to the pros.)
