Tom Izzo has been known to embrace Midnight Madness silliness more than most, but his latest stunt -- a celebration of the thirty years since Magic Johnson and company won the NCAA title -- might be his funniest/most eye-popping wardrobe choice ever.
Here's my thing: I enjoy historical accuracy. My favorite television show is Mad Men, a show that prides itself on -- and at times even thrives thanks to -- its intense appreciation of historical minutiae. And I've got to say: That wardrobe is all wrong. I wasn't around in 1979, but I've seen Boogie Nights and plenty of Talking Heads concert footage and I can promise you that people didn't dress with peace sign accessories in 1979. Come on, Tom. A little effort, huh?

I realize that it is not accuracy that matters (I was there at MSU in '79, football 78-81) but a bit of whimsical in a day and age of too much seriousness and hardship and not enough enjoyment. These Coaches, players, fans and alumni will be going thru the trails and tribulations of the upcoming season. I think the most of Coach Izzo and what he has done for the Basketball program at MSU. A little jocularity is needed and appreciated.
How about a little effort from your attitude since you obviously have never competed on the collegiate level! And considering the gross inaccuracies from everyday items from burgers to movies, I think it a scream that a leading Division One Coach would have the cahones to do this!!! BRILLIANT!!!!!!!!!! GO SPARTANS!!!!!!!!!

it is ironic that izzo looks so natural in the hippie getup when his personality/attitude is so non-hippie.

Geez, lighten up. It's a GAME. "Trials and tribulations"??? They're not being sent to Iraq, they choose this because they love it and might hope to make big money at it eventually. I completed my doctorate at MSU the same year they won it all, and I think Izzo is as good as they get, by the way. But the first poster is absolutely right about the innacuracy - they could have gone with disco or urban cowboy garb and been accurate and just as funny. But it's way worse in "That 70's Show" and many other pop culture representations of the 1970's.
