Oh fine, just one comment. Did it look a little dirty? Yeah, maybe. Neal throws his forearm a bit at the end. (It's more obvious in another replay.) But that doesn't change the fact that somebody on Duke should have called it out and, more importantly, the Blue Devils wrote the book on legal-but-dirty screens

Thanks, Mr. Irrelevant

OK seriously this Duke hate has to stop. Chris, what exactly is your problem? Its nice how you conveniently leave out that the MD fans CHEERED while Smith was down. I can only assume you were doing the same. Why don't you ever write anything of substance besides Duke hate? Why does Yahoo! have some vendetta against Duke, because between you and Eamon, this blog has nothing to say.

Matthew, What are you you bringing to the table? Anything other than incessant whining? If this ribbing and banter gives you the vapors, then I suggest you attempt aerial copulation with rotating pastry. (It's a Vonnegut quote, cleaned up for the delicate eyes and ears that is Yahoo!)

chris, your stupidity and lack of understanding of basketball continues to astound me.
have you ever played basketball on any sort of organized team? when you set a screen, do you keep your arms across your chest with your elbows out? do you lean into a player half your size and push into him with your forearm? no, you absolutely don't. you cover your nuts so you don't have one popped, and you stand your ground without leaning in or out of contact. you learn that your first week as a freshman on a high school team.
that play was 100% dirty, and you're a fool if you think otherwise.

b b, I don't write a blog for a living, so unlike Chris, I have no obligation to bring anything to the table. But I don't bring weak sauce to the table with lame Vonnegut quotes. I quote Shakespeare you most notable coward, infinite and endless liar, hourly promise breaker, and owner of no one good quality." (Alls Well that Ends Well).

I don't like Duke, but why the hell does the trainer have to wait for play to stop while the guy is writhing on the ground not breathing?
Plenty of kids have died from blows to the chest causing irregular heartbeat. Granted, he just got the wind knocked out of him, but is it really a good idea to wait 35 seconds while the guy may or may not be dying?

At least I said it was dirty. Your buddy Jay Bilas spent the entire evening claiming it was legal and fair. Did he play any organized basketball? Let me know if you can find out that info for me. Thanks.

That was meant to jsk. But Matthew, I didn't leave out how Maryland fans cheered. They cheered the screen and cheered the follow-up basket, but I thought they were pretty civilized when Smith was down. Considering some of their "classy" chants earlier in the night (particularly one directed toward Kyle Singler), I was impressed with their collective restraint.

It was a beautiful screen and I cheered out loud when Smith hit the ground. I cheered even louder when the guy hit a three on the other end. For years dook players have played dirty, Laettner stomp, Tauntay's screen at the end of a blow-out that broke Justin Gray's jaw, Henderson's rape of hansblo at the end of another game where the outcome had been decided, Tauntay's push-ups on top of another player, ratface's foul language and intimidation of the officials, that walk-on stiff from a few years ago who tried to attack an official after an NCAA loss. What comes around goes around. They get what they deserve and I loved every minute of it! What was classic was seeing the guy writhing on the ground in pain while ratface argues with the refs, trying to get a call, instead of showing concern for his injured player. He doesn't give a darn about anyone but himself, and he is the worst thing to EVER happen to college basketball.

Chris devotes an entire blog to doing nothing but hating on dook because HE HATES DOOK! Isn't it obvious. Just like 95% of the basketball fans in the country. He is going for the mainstream audience. My gosh, you've got dookie v spewing his idiot pro-dook vitrol all over the place on national television because HE LOVES DOOK! I don't see you complaining about that one-eyed octogenerian giving dook too much love. If you don't like the blog, DON'T READ IT!!

Rick J must be a terp. This sums it up the best.
And speaking of Maryland fans, here’s what we think about their attempted prank of calling Duke hotel rooms all night: pretty weak, and here’s why. Because, quite simply, they might just as well have run up a white flag and said there’s no way we can beat Duke on a level playing field.
Inadvertently, they underscored the long-running truth of the Maryland world, from Gary on down. There’s a raging, Costanza-size insecurity at the root of their self-identity. It’s what leads Gary to yell at the refs in the Final Four, “how much do you want Duke to win!” It’s why fans pick fights when they lose. It’s why they throw bottles and heated pennies at their conquerors
The reality is that at the heart of the Maryland athletic identity, they expect to lose. And because of that, they take as much, if not more pleasure in making other people miserable as they do in their own successes.
In short, it’s a loser attitude which often rebounds on them. Which is why no one should get too bent out of shape over this one. Wait for a few hours and you’ll see bitter complaints about the officiating as well. Which again is fine, because it means they’re focused on being losers. And that’s great - for Duke.

What the heck would a dook fan know about a level playing field? ratface won't come out of his rathole dump of a high school gym except when he has to. If he does, he goes to New Jersey or New York, where 90% of the world's dook fans crawl around. This and the lack of protection from the officials leaves him vulnerable in the NCAA tournament. The reason for all the antics of Maryland fans and everyone else is the hate that comes from seeing one program get preferential treatment for years and lauded for good sportsmanship when they are nothing but sore losers and crying babies. ratface being friends with barakat, the head of officials was a horrible conflict of interest that was finally rectified. dook players' family getting jobs in durham they wouldn't normally be able to get smacks of an NCAA scandal right there. ratface being allowed to recruit all year long with his ridiculous amex commericals (BTW, Amex, if you are listening, I will NEVER own an Amex card just for that reason), dookie v mouthing off about dook in EVERY GAME HE EVER CALLS, even if dook is not playing. It all contributes to an unfair advantage when recruiting, and something that should be investigated by the NCAA.

Actually, the crowd was chanting "David Neal" for the several minutes Smith was down - I was at the game. Not classy. However Neal checked in with K and Smith after the game to see if he was okay - now that IS classy. This is why I like Gary and the MD program. The fans however are total insecure d-bags who were throwing a good coach under the bus not 2 weeks ago. Nice work.

    Chris,
Spal70 is exactly right, the fans clearly cheered while Smith was down and chanted "F-u Singler" after a Maryland guy stepped on Singler's foot. Classy. I'm sure through your UNC-blue glasses this was perfectly justified, because by simply reading your blog: the refs are paid by Duke, Dickie V only roots for Duke (watch the games, he roots for UNC and every ACC team and any team that is halfway decent), and Duke never does anything well (that dunk from Henderson was INSANE, how do you not link to that). This only confirms what I've been saying all along, you have some weird vendetta/obsession with Duke. Chris, did they reject you (judging by your writing abilities, rightly so)? If so, then Stanford must have rejected you too. Why not be mad at them? Or at UVA? Please stop bringing the weak sauce.

I repeat, like I do every time that a post like this comes up... All you Duke fans realize that Chris Chase obviously has some vendetta against Duke, and yet you keep coming back and reading his posts. Do yourself a favor and read something else! I hate Duke as much as or maybe more than Chris Chase and thats why I read it. There are 1,000 other blogs on the internet that you guys can read, so if you hate it so much just stay away.
Oh yeah I almost forgot, GO HEELS!!!!!
