The Dagger - NCAAB

Saturday night, putative Louisville starters Terrence Jennings and Jerry Smith were arrested for resisting arrest. There were no other charges listed, but surely they had to be doing something illegal before they were arrested, and thus resisting arrest, else how could they have been resisting in the first place, right? See what I mean?

Welp, I can stop with the little rhetorical games: Smith and Jennings were (allegedly) doing other bad things (it's fun to do bad things!) for which they have now been charged (with battery and disorderly conduct, specifically). More details from "Terrence and Jerry Go to Jeffersonville":

The police report said several off-duty officers — all of whom were wearing clearly marked T-shirts with "Police" on the front and back — were working at the party when a fight broke out inside. Officer Tom Mitchell found Jennings, a 6-foot-9 sophomore from Sacramento, Calif., pushing and shoving people, according to his report. Jennings was eventually escorted outside and placed on the ground but "continued to fight with officers; trying to get back to his feet and refusing to place his hands behind his back." Jennings said he wasn't aware at the time he was being confronted by off-duty police.

[...] Police say Smith, 22, a 6-foot-2 senior from Wauwatosa, Wis., approached officers after Jennings was placed in handcuffs. Smith refused to comply with requests to back away and resisted when an officer attempted to restrain him, according to the report.

That's really not so bad. Sure, Jennings should not be fighting at some party in Jeffersonville, Ind., especially with the season just a few weeks away. Offseasons are boring; do your fighting then. But I think we can all empathize with Smith, who was probably just as confused as Jennings about the whole off-duty cop thing and who was by all accounts just trying to look out for his friend. Then again, when someone burly and cop-ish wearing a clearly marked shirt that reads "POLICE" in those big white block letters, usually it's best to just do what that person says. And also not fight him/them.

Both players have already apologized for the incident, which never hurts, and both players' mugshots have entered into the Internet record, so it's possible this story has just about run its course. But hey, looking good, fellas! Is that an Ed Hardy t-shirt? No wonder you were fighting cops. (Because people in Ed Hardy shirts like to fight, you see. Don't get mad at me. It's a scientific fact.)

They should've been able to tell they were cops by the bacon smell.
