Hey, who remembers this?

That was Edgar Sosa's finest moment as a Louisville Cardinal in 2008-09, and probably his finest overall. It gave Louisville a hard-fought win at home over rival Kentucky, a loss that would have been a disaster in retrospect, given the two teams' divergent paths late in the season. (Louisville went on to the win the Big East; Kentucky ended up chasing its coach out of town.)

Sosa's shot was also important because it marked the full re-emergence of the point guard into Rick Pitino's trusted circle. For a while there, Pitino considered shipping Sosa off to a school that "didn't play any defense." The relationship between the two was not good, and Sosa seems lucky to have to survived at Louisville in one piece.

That seems forever ago. Now Pitino is not only singing Sosa's preseason praises to the media at every turn -- he's made Sosa a team captain:

He reserved his biggest praise for senior co-captains Smith and Sosa, deeming them “one of the best backcourts in the nation.” He said Smith is in the best shape of any of his offseasons, and he predicted a big year for Sosa.“There's not a doubt in my mind he'll be one of the premier point guards in the nation and we'll be watching him after this season on television,” Pitino said. “That's how strongly I feel about his commitment to our team and to his future.”

We could maybe count that as false high praise, the sort of thing a coach does for a kid he really likes, but we've seen before how unafraid Pitino is to rag on Sosa's play. That quote actually means something. We'll see how much it means when Sosa takes the floor this winter. Until then, it's just a nice thing to say.

Pitino along with the rest of Card Nation have been singing this kid's praises ever since he dropped a cool 31 on aTm in the 2007 NCAA Tournament. However, Sosa hasn't come close to duplicating those numbers since that game. Sosa has watched his minutes decrease each year since his freshman year and hasn't developed into what the Cards thought he would be. To me, this just sounds like coach speak and I would be shocked if Sosa is anything but mediocre in his senior campaign.
