The Dagger - NCAAB

When a new coach takes over a program, it's usually because the old coach was bad, and the players weren't great either, and the program in general needs a reboot, and so on and so forth. Usually, it means fans have to settle for a few years of bad or at least mediocre basketball. The promise of future success is usually what matters. That's what keeps folks interested. Exhibit A: Indiana University and Tom Crean.

Just south of IU, though, John Calipari is pretty much destroying everything we know about what happens when new coaches come to programs. Calipari is recruiting new talent at a blistering place; even if he misses on uber-recruit John Wall (and who, knowing Calipari, would bet against him in that race?), he has top point guard recruit Eric Bledsoe on the roster, just in case. Add in a pair of five-star recruits retained from the Memphis recruitment process, and you've got a team that could lose star veterans Jodie Meeks and Patrick Patterson and still be just fine, thanks.

What's even more insane is that that probably won't happen. Late Friday night, Patrick Patterson announced that he was pulling his name out of the NBA draft and returning for another season at Kentucky, one in which he can stretch his legs in Calipari's perimeter-based dribble drive offense and prove to pro scouts that he can play facing the hoop, too. It's a great fit, one Calipari has been chirping about since he took over the job.

Retaining Patterson might be Calipari's most important recruitment yet. Next up is Jodie Meeks; can Cal convince one of the country's best scorers to wait another year on the draft? Again, who wants that bet? Without Meeks, the Wildcats look like a lock atop the SEC and a top 10 team. With him, they might just be the most talented team in the country in 2009-10.

Calipari has been the coach for, what, a month or so? That sound you hear is the rest of the country shuddering.

The bottom line is UK will be FINALLY away from Plowball and Muleball and we have a great coach who will make basketball fun and a powerful force as basketball is supposed to be at THE University of Kentucky.
Make sure you discuss it at Dynasty Defenders

If Meeks and Wall are on the Kentucky roster this season, we could be looking at the next Dream Team!

If Meeks returns, Kentucky is a top 5 team out-of-the-gate. Add Wall and they become the pre-season #1.
No brainer. The Jayhawks are very talented, yes. Adding Henry was huge, but all you have to do is compare the rosters, folks. IF UK adds Meeks and Wall there won't be anybody close. That's not a reach. That's not a UK fan putting the cart before the horse. Basic logic.

I am hopping Meeks and Wall come to UK. With that much talent, they could become the most dominant team in the NCAA. NC has a slim chance of being a repeating champion. With their total wins closer to KY total, we need a really good season to stay the most winningest team in NCAA history. Unfortunately, UNC passed us up in most NCAA tourney victories but I do not see us going to NIT this season. For the first time since 1996, I am EXCITED about the UK Bball program again!

UK will be so good, they might have a chance to win at Memorial Gym next year.
Seriously, it'll be interesting to see Calipari coach against other excellent coaches, rather than the dregs of a mid-major like Conference USA. Welcome to the big-time, John.

I'd be happy with a top ten start, the players do have to get use to playing together. By the end of the season though i'd say top three, and if so, then anything less than final four would be dissapointing.

the hawks are gonna go 10-11 deep...by far the preseason #1, possibly unanimous just like unc last season. Kentucky will be a top ten team probably with meeks and wall. but outside of their starting 5 who else does kentucky really have? sorry, i take Collins-Aldrich-Henry over Wall-Patterson-Meeks all day everyday.

UK will have all that talent, but they will loose in the first round in March. You can not have an allstar in every position. Too many egoes. UK team will not be that good as people think they will. Cal, went at it the wrong way. You do not burn your former team in the process. Roy William did it the right way, went he left Kansas. That is why Kansas beat Coach Cal a year ago. Coach Cal, killed his former team by the process of how he left. Left the former team with something or even try to help them out. Why recruit the same play they need to keep their program on the top without a loosing a beat. They what great coaches do. That what great leaders do. GO SEC TEAMS, Not UK!!!!

The class act of Roy Williams left KU on probation. There has been infractions at NC but have been
overlooked and he even encouraged his team to have fun at the gambling sites during the NCAA
championships. I am a cat fan living in NC and all is not at eye-level in NC. In most cases players commit to
coaches not schools. Everyone keeps referring to Wall coming to KY, KY has some very capable back up for Meeks=Patterson and Bledsoe. The CATS will be 10 deep and strong and their back-ups want be shabby!
There is much of a buzz and it is mostly about UK and that has been lacking for several years now, happy to have
it back. Go Cal, GO CATS, GO UK.

Who cares what school is # 1 preseason, it's whose # 1 at the end of the season. College hoops unlike college football, you have to earn the national championship. In football if you are preseason # 1, in a weak conference and go undefeated, you play in the championship game. Not so in basketball. With the talent Calipari has coming in mixed with Patterson and Meeks who will return after testing the NBA waters, UK will go deep in the NCAA tourney and have a shot at another title. All those frosh phenoms will be sophomores by Mar.
    UK is back !

Rock Sock beat a Jayhawk. C-A-T-S CATS CATS CATS whipping your A**.
