The Dagger - NCAAB

Friends, nobles, lend me your ears. If you have Kentucky on the schedule in 2009-10, things just got exceedingly more difficult for you. No. 1 overall recruit John Wall has made his decision, according to Rivals' excellent Jerry Meyer: Wall will play at Kentucky this season.

The recruitment has gone on long enough that most people are familiar with the various permutations behind the scenes, but in case you're catching up, a quick primer: Wall is the best recruit in the country. He considered leaving for the NBA draft on a fifth-year-senior technicality before deciding to attend college. He eventually narrowed his list of schools -- which could have included every school in the world, had he wanted -- to Duke, Miami and Kentucky. Miami would have been his show and he liked the campus. Duke needed a point guard right away and his handler, AAU coach Brian Clifton, liked the idea of Duke's sheltered team environment keeping out the hangers-on. (Oh, and Wall was arrested for breaking and entering on May 4, but it doesn't seem to have affected his recruitment in the slightest.)

Kentucky, on the other hand, was at a disadvantage: John Calipari just signed another top point guard, Eric Bledsoe, to go along with the returning DeAndre Liggins. Would Wall need to compete for time? Would that affect his decision? Did Kentucky think it was out of the Wall sweepstakes, and instead signed Bledsoe as insurance?

Turns out, you never underestimate Calipari when it comes to recruiting. He is unstoppable. It's frightening, really. After convincing Patrick Patterson to forgo the NBA -- despite an outside chance of being a lottery pick -- Calipari will bring in four five-star recruits to next year's Kentucky team, including the best player in the country, a guy who plays a little bit like a smoother, ambidextrous Derrick Rose. Kentucky was already going to be good next year. This is terrifying. Not just for other teams; nay, for humanity at large. Calipari, through whatever means, is apparently capable of convincing young men that Memphis and Lexington are truly desirable places to spend a year before heading to the NBA. Let's pray he sticks to basketball. That elevated form of persuasion is not to be trifled with.

Update: In the interest of providing credit where due, SLAM broke the story at like 1 a.m. this morning. Excellent work, SLAM. (For real, that magazine rules.)

Calipari did not convince Patrick Patterson to forgo the NBA Draft. Both Patrick and Coach Calipari said that in their respective press conferences.
You are correct however saying that If you have Kentucky on the schedule in 2009-10, things just got exceedingly more difficult for you.

Wow why would you go there? Kentucky is done..... Should have gone to Florida if he was going anywhere in the SEC.... They have the best chance to be a contender the next 4 years... Why he did not choose an ACC team I don't know.... But Florida is where he should have gone if he wanted to play in the south.

First of all, the breaking/entering thing was blown way out of proportion! The kid simply wandered into an abandoned, unlocked foreclosed house...curiosity...don't tell me all of you haven't done silly things when you were a high schooler! The fact that it was JW under the public microscope is what made it headlines....gimme a break!!
JW has had a long time relationship with Calipari which was the decider. JW will be an instant star....it only takes one season to win a championship, so why would he go to Florida when they can't even fill their own arena? At UK they could possibly have 70,000 just turn out for Midnight Madness....duh! ...not to mention the big juicy TV broadcast contract UK just signed. Calipari opened a Twitter account 3 weeks ago and now has 50,000 followers!...other coaches 3-5K...what does that say about fan support?
While I won't crown them yet, UK will win the SEC, go to the NCAA...from there....be afraid, be very afraid!

Thanks #3, for the flat out most ridiculous, bizarre, incorrect, and laughable comment I've ever read. You are aware UK just snagged the #1 (Wall) and #2 (Cousin) top recruits in the nation, along with a horde of seriously good players (Orton, Bledsoe, Wall, Dodson)? I mean wow dude, WOW.

It would be great if Calipari could talk 2 or 3 of these monster recruits to stay and twopeat if not threepeat. GO CATS. GO CALIPARI. What an outstanding hire for the WILDCAT NATION. Watch out people, hear we come.

Cat fans don't start drinking the Kool-Aid yet. We have a long road ahead, it is not going to be automatic, this is why we drive ourselves nuts. Lets let Coach Cal do his thing and enjoy the whole process, the titles will come, enjoy and breath. PS - Duke fans, how does it feel to be on the downslide?

Let's not forget...Cal had a lot of top recruits at Memphis. Yes, this is his best recruiting class ever, yes the Cats will win the SEC (which is no where near the conference it used to be in basketball). However, let's not forget that FUNDAMENTALS win championships. If talent won championships, Cal's best bud Bob Huggins would have a handful of national titles instead of just 1 Final Four appearance. If all you UK fans are so sure the Cats will win it all...take out a second mortgage and bet it. Put your money where your mouth is. If your so sure, do something about it. Don't get me sideways, I am not a UK hater. I love the game, and love to see anyone who works hard be rewarded for their endeavors. That being said, Cal's teams do NOT work hard on the fundamentals of the game. That is exactly why they will NOT win it all.

And how'd that John Wall SAT score go from 750 to 1410? Is that Memphis carryover at UK?
