If you missed the Saturday night contest between Duke and North Carolina, you
missed the above display of man beef in order to distract a free-throw shooter.
But the real star here is Dan Shulman, who had to navigate his way through so
many bizarre obstacles.
First, there's the mention of the "passing of the baton" between
Speedo Guys, which I'd like to believe was a subtle phallic reference. Then,
Shulman had to fake laugh at Dick Vitale's "You've never seen me in a
Speedo!" comment, while probably thinking to himself, "My God, was
there a danger of that happening?"
And then at the end, the network made him force out that apology, which was a
brutal spot to put him in.
"Hey Dan, you know that guy in the Speedo we just showed? You know, the video we cued up and showed in slow-motion of a nearly-nude man pointing to his junk for about five seconds? We're going to need you to apologize for that, and act like it was an accident. Yes, Dan, we're aware that we went to an instant replay of the event and showed it in slow-motion. Just act like it was accidental, really unfortunate, and put the blame on the kid. Thanks Dan!"You can see the ESPN-friendly iteration of Speedo Guy from 2005 after the jump:

Vitale: "Tyler Hansbrough is the hardest working player I've ever seen."
Shulman: "I don't even know how you'd argue that."
Less of an agreement and more of a dig? I'd like to think so. +1 Shulman.
