By which I mean to say: Isiah Thomas agrees that he is worth zero dollars, and will be paid accordingly:
Thomas’ introduction to FIU on Wednesday included the revelation that the former New York Knicks coach and president—who’s still owed millions from the NBA team—will donate his salary back to the school for his first season. School officials did not release the exact figure, other than saying it’s between $200,000 and $300,000.
“I did not come here for the money,” Thomas said.
Was anyone under the impression that Isiah Thomas was going to Florida International University for the money? I mean, really? Anyone even remotely familiar with Thomas' recent past knows he made a whole bundle during his time with the Knicks. First, there's his own multimillion dollar salary. Then there's his popcorn company, which probably makes a decent chunk of change. And then there's whatever is left from his salary as a professional basketball player. As long as Isiah's grasp of his personal finances is even marginally better than his handle on the NBA salary cap, he is a filthy rich man. He doesn't need $300,000 a year from FIU.
Still, OK. It's a gesture. It's a sign of good will. It's a notion that even if Isiah burns FIU to the ground in his first season, at least he won't be getting paid for it. And that's something, right?
