Craig Robinson has had an exceedingly successful first season as Oregon State's head coach. After OSU's winless conference season in 2007-08, Robinson took over, and in one year the Beavers have improved to 7-9 in the conference and 13-14 overall. It's a remarkable improvement, really, and one for which Robinson should receive a lion's share of the credit. Oregon State appears to have made a very wise coaching hire.
The next step is recruiting. Coaching up marginal players is a great way to improve your status, but it's no way to win permanently, which is why Robinson might enlist his brother-in-law to help him. It helps that his brother-in-law is the President of the United States:
“I think the President has the right to call any citizen that he feels like calling any time he wants. I haven’t had to use him yet, but I think I ought to petition the NCAA to see what the ruling will be on that before I do it.”
If you listen to the actual interview, you can tell Robinson is joking, but only barely. That's a serious recruiting trump card. Frankly, there are plenty of coaches who wouldn't be able to resist the temptation of wielding it. Whether or not that's actually legal -- and whether we ought to be comfortable with the notion that our President is sneaking in calls to high school ballers between budget meetings and health care summits -- are entirely separate matters.
(More seriously, it's probably worth noting that Obama could never actually pick up a phone once and still have an impact on Robinson's recruiting. Is there any question the coach's profile has been raised his brother-in-law's success? It's probably not going to close any deals, but it can't hurt getting Robinson in the door, right?)

And those of you who think Obama is our savior, try telling yourselves that in five years when you look back and realize the looting of the country accelerated the moment Obama took office and started spending at a pace that makes Dubya look fiscally conservative, and that there was no cause and effect between the big spending now and the economic recovery, if there is one.

in the polls. Coach Robinson had to instill some discipline and create a foundation with his team. Take a look at the way Oregon State was playing early in the season. Why he had to bench people and
make everyone on his team aware of that he was the coach. His runs against Washington, the upset of SC early in conference play and the work against the Oregon
Ducks made people see that he was getting the players to believe in his style of coaching. Consider that Coach Robinson was starting with a team in shambles, very little support in the way of
facilities and players that had endured a season with no wins.I for one think he did an admiral job.

I have not heard the conversation, so I hope it was playful kidding by Robinson and that this journalist is putting his spin on the situation. As for the President, I think it is a bit early to form too many one-sided opinions.
