The Dagger - NCAAB

Craig Robinson has had an exceedingly successful first season as Oregon State's head coach. After OSU's winless conference season in 2007-08, Robinson took over, and in one year the Beavers have improved to 7-9 in the conference and 13-14 overall. It's a remarkable improvement, really, and one for which Robinson should receive a lion's share of the credit. Oregon State appears to have made a very wise coaching hire.

The next step is recruiting. Coaching up marginal players is a great way to improve your status, but it's no way to win permanently, which is why Robinson might enlist his brother-in-law to help him. It helps that his brother-in-law is the President of the United States:

“I think the President has the right to call any citizen that he feels like calling any time he wants.  I haven’t had to use him yet, but I think I ought to petition the NCAA to see what the ruling will be on that before I do it.”

If you listen to the actual interview, you can tell Robinson is joking, but only barely. That's a serious recruiting trump card. Frankly, there are plenty of coaches who wouldn't be able to resist the temptation of wielding it. Whether or not that's actually legal -- and whether we ought to be comfortable with the notion that our President is sneaking in calls to high school ballers between budget meetings and health care summits -- are entirely separate matters.

(More seriously, it's probably worth noting that Obama could never actually pick up a phone once and still have an impact on Robinson's recruiting. Is there any question the coach's profile has been raised his brother-in-law's success? It's probably not going to close any deals, but it can't hurt getting Robinson in the door, right?)

Obama needs to quit hanging around basketball arenas and movie stars like Brad Pitt and start figuring out how to fix this economy. He is more concerned with hanging out and being cool and hip than he is with doing anything. We've got a popularity contest winner in the White House. The market is down 25% since he took over. The market has ZERO faith in him! America made a huge mistake!

rick j, you are very much mistaken. obama is the hardest working president that i can remember. the amount that his administriation have accomplished in a short period of time is truly impressive. in fact, he was extremely busy trying to address the problems in the economy and get his administration in place even before he was inaugurated. you may not agree with his approach or his policy, and whether or not his strategies will work is still in question, but to calim that he is more concerned with "hanging out and being cool and hip" than he is with addressing our country's problems is just plain ignorant.

I'm not able to understand why some people always complain and accuse Obama of not doing his job just because ever now and then attends a basketball game (see the Wizards/Bulls nba game last week) or play basketball with his friends. The man is human and it's not humanly possible to work 24/7. So what's the problem if he spends his free time watching the sport he loves? Do those people bashing Obama work 24/7? I doubt it. Some people are really short-sighted and hypocrits. Sorry but that's the truth.

Rick j, keep your pants on. The market is merely bearing out the fruition of the seeds that the Bush Administration sowed. now Obama is left to clean up the giant mess created by the irresponsible Republicans! So the man likes basketball- so do a lot of Americans who aren't the leader of the Free World, and don't work nearly as hard. Obama deserves a lot of credit and to enjoy himself a little once in a while.

I wish this really obnoxious story would die. I am sick of Obama being referenced in EVERY SINGLE ARTICLE about Craig Robinson. I am starting to want him to suck it up so he gets fired before the end of the Obama administration so I do not have to be plastered with his accidentally famous familial ties every time I read about Oregon State basketball.
And those of you who think Obama is our savior, try telling yourselves that in five years when you look back and realize the looting of the country accelerated the moment Obama took office and started spending at a pace that makes Dubya look fiscally conservative, and that there was no cause and effect between the big spending now and the economic recovery, if there is one.

It's amazing that the 1st 5 comments only talk about the President when this is suppossed to be about Craig Robinson. Yes, i know the relation but the 1st poster has to be the biggest idiot alive. He tried to turn this whole blog into some political bashing crap. This is a college basketball blog not a blog about politics and the economy. If you want to make idiotic comments about the President and politics go somewhere else. Again, this blog is about COLLEGE BASKETBALL. Friggin idiots. I really can't stand you people. Especially when you base your opinions on nothing. Yeah that's you #1. Anyways Craig Robinson should easily win Pac-10 coach of the year. He won't though because they never give the award to a coach who's team was awful and he made them decent. They always give it to a coach who's team was already good and they got a little better. That's why Romar at UW will get it. I'm not saying that Romar didn't do a great job but the job Robinson did was 10 times better. Romar's team won the Pac-10 because they didn't lose any of their players from last year. Cal, Stanford, Arizona, USC and especially UCLA all lost their best players and were 1st round draft picks. All in the top 20 picks(UCLA had 2). If all those players came back UW would have finished between 4th-6th probably. Oregon St. was the worst team i have ever seen last year. I'm not kidding. The worst ever. They were 0-18 in conference. They won more conference games this year than in the last 3 years combined. They lost every conference game last year by an average of 24 points. He somehow got them to win 7 games in the Pac-10 this year. You people might not think this is amazing but i follow the Pac-10 and know how bad they were. This is more than amazing. Great job Craig Robinson. You deserve all the praise you get for just winning 1 game with that team.

Geeze!!!! Lets give a little here. Robinson liked the idea of coaching. Way before his compadre Obama had any lead
in the polls. Coach Robinson had to instill some discipline and create a foundation with his team. Take a look at the way Oregon State was playing early in the season. Why he had to bench people and
make everyone on his team aware of that he was the coach. His runs against Washington, the upset of SC early in conference play and the work against the Oregon
Ducks made people see that he was getting the players to believe in his style of coaching. Consider that Coach Robinson was starting with a team in shambles, very little support in the way of
facilities and players that had endured a season with no wins.I for one think he did an admiral job.

Obama's solution to most severe crisis since the great depression: Raise taxes overall, raise energy costs via cap-n-trade system, and stimulate economy with slooooow rollout infrastructure initiatives loaded with earmarks and prok.

If Obama was calling recruits it would be an NCAA rules violation. I am sure that Coach Robinson would not want that type of attention to his program. Look what phone calls did to Indiana.
I have not heard the conversation, so I hope it was playful kidding by Robinson and that this journalist is putting his spin on the situation. As for the President, I think it is a bit early to form too many one-sided opinions.
