The Dagger - NCAAB

The Gaels, with a healthy Patty Mills, opened the season 18-1. Then Mills went down with a wrist injury in the first half of a game against Gonzaga. With Mills, the Gaels led by six at halftime, and then without Mills, they lost the second half by 13.

They went on to lose three of the next four. With a bit of time, they rebounded and adjusted without him, and went on a five-game win streak while they waited for the wrist to heal. Then Mills returned to the line-up, clearly at less than full strength, and Saint Mary's won unimpressively against Portland, and then lost to Gonzaga in the WCC tournament.

So, to recap: Saint Mary's, with Patty Mills healthy and playing as well as he can, was damn near unstoppable. They opened 18-1, and were beating Gonzaga on the road. With Mills out of the line-up they struggle, and with Mills easing his way back onto the floor, they continue to struggle.

And here's maybe the biggest kicker: Even with the Mills injury struggles, this is a team that won 26 games. Twenty-six wins, and they didn't get in.

Ultimately, the numbers just squeezed them out. Some bubble-unfriendly conference winners (USC, Mississippi State, etc.) really shrunk the bubble, and, as I saw things, only left room for one bubble team. That happened to be Arizona.

And it's true that Saint Mary's didn't play much of a non-conference schedule, and that's a legitimate point for those who argue for their exclusion. But if Patty Mills had been healthy all-season long, I don't think there's any question that this is a tournament team, and when you look at the Gaels right now, Mills is just now rounding back into form.

It's just too bad. I can't say that anyone clearly deserved to be bumped in their favor (and Arizona was my pick for that last bubble spot), but I think it's unfortunate that we don't get to see what they can do in the tournament.

Somebody is always going to be #66. Actually, St. Mary's is probably somewhere in the 40's as far as being a quality team, since there are 15 or 20 garbage teams that win their MetroMIcroMini conference tournament and take their @$$-beating on Thursday and Friday.
All the whining and fussing about who's in and out (like Arizona vs. St. Mary's) doesn't mean squat once the first weekend is over, because they're all done by then.
Somebody needs to shoot Dicky V. with one of those tranquilizer darts they use to sedate wild animals.

This sounds like the crying contest we hear with football. It was supposed to be the field of 64, now is is 65. bob knight said it and none of the ESPN commentators responded when he said " just make it a field of 128 and then everyone with a winning record will have a chance to play". Time to quit talking about the could-of- should of been teams and break down these brackets.

I'd say Penn State has a gripe as well: they got left out while two teams that finished behind them in the Big 10 got in (Michigan, Minnesota).

KW - I just didn't care for Dicky V not allowing Jay BIlas to finish anything he was trying to say without rudely interrupting him and out-voluming him to defend his opinion. Let the other person say their piece and hear all they have to say before cutting him off so you can get your two cents in. Conversations involve listening as well as talking, and Dicky V. is a one-way street. I do appreciate his passion and love for college hoops, though, but he needs to relax a little bit. Quite a bit, actually. :-)

What does Arizona have to do NOT to make the tournament? 9-10 in the conference, went a pathetic 2-9 on the road (beating Oregon and Oregon State), and lost 5 of their last 6. As much as everyone bashes C-USA: Arizona went 1-1 against this group (beating Houston in OT, losing to UAB--both at home of course).
They had a remarkable 6 game conference stretch in early February and that single-handedly got them in the tournament.

Arizona, Wisconsin, and Michigan. They don't belong. St. Mary's, Creighton, and Illinois State, they belong.

Hmmmmmmmm. Arizona beat six tourny teams. St. Mary's beat one tourny team. Arizona beat Gonzaga convincingly. St. Mary's lost to Gonzaga convincingly. St. Mary's got a raw deal? Yeah Right:)

wow...Double B makes a good point about Arizona.
I also agree that Michigan should not be there.....let alone as a 10 seed

Creighton had 26 wins too...and honestly, the Missouri Valley Conference is just a TINY bit tougher than the WCC. I think even Illinois State might have been a better choice than St. Mary's.

there is no reason wisconsin should be there. st. mary's got cheated for this one. i could see arizona rather then wisconsin and wisconsin has no right to be there. patrick mills is a fantastic player and that short stretch where he got injured ruined their season. and even then they beat utah state WITHOUT patrick mills. i think thats enough of a reason. another handful of teams got overlooked and i agree with drwighty with proving it should be expanded.

Agree with the post about blow-hard Vitale. The problem is that Jay Bilas has an overinflated ego and thinks he is always right as well. For example: Jay on Saturday whilst giving his worthless opinions on pretty much everything during a game broadcast: "Baylor is very capable of beating Missouri." Really Jay? Thanks.
