As
you know, all four No. 1 seeds have advanced to the Final Four for the
first time in NCAA Tournament History. Some are choosing to see this as
a reason to pat the backs of the Selection Committee, the group charged with deciding, among other things, who deserves the four top spots.
I offer no such back pats.
Honestly,
how hard was it to pick the top seeds in the tournament this year?
There was a grand total of one snubbed team (Tennessee) that could've
even made an argument for inclusion. Jessica Simpson or a gerbil on LSD
could've taken one look at the AP Top 25 and nailed the one-seeds this
year.
And to say that the Committee should get credit when all
the top seeds advance is to say that they should be blamed when the top
seeds don't advance. Was I
supposed to curse the Committee in 2006 because they didn't have George
Mason as a No. 1seed? Were they supposed to see that coming? Would it
have been fair to paint the committee as dumb if Davidson's last-second
shot against Kansas had fallen yesterday?
And even if you did
choose to see this as evidence of the committee "getting it right," it
would be the only time in history that they've ever done so. Hooray.
Congratulations on that "once every 29 years" success rate (they
started seeding teams in 1979).
See, a criticism like that just
isn't fair. Upsets happen. Sometimes, a team that deserves a No. 1 seed
can't put together four good games in a row. Sometimes, a team seeded
No. 2 or lower peaks at the right time. Sometimes, teams get lucky.
It's the job of the Committee to gradeperformances, not see the future.
Unless
you're filling out a bracket and getting every game right every year, I
don't think you're in a position to say the committee's job was good or
bad, based on whether or not things went exactly as they said they'd go.

How many times did the #1 team fall this year? How many times did you right articles about is Tennessee for real? How many times did you give votes to Duke when they were #1? Man, please!
Shut up and just watch the games. You're in time out!
