Maryland. Duke. Not fans of each other, to say the least. The rivalry is what Los Angeles Times columnist Bill Plaschke might call a "thoroughfare of debate." [Language alert.] (Also: Wha?) Among the two sides, Maryland has the upper hand in unrequited hate. Few teams, or people, hate anything as much as Maryland people hate Duke. And if you can maintain a safe distance from the screaming, it's actually quite entertaining.

Enter Gary Williams. Williams, none too pleased about the rumors of his demise, took the first good jab of the college basketball media season at ACC media day. Some dudes with a blog named "Mister Irrelevant" -- never heard of them! -- have the details:

Fans will grumble that Gary needs to go, and then they’ll end up sixth or seventh in the best conference in the country and make the tourney. Best part of the media day was Gary’s quote about fans forgetting he won a national championship, “Some people think it is ancient history. It is not as ancient history as Duke’s last title” in 2001.

One correction: The ACC will not be the best conference in the country this year. I'm afraid that will go to the Big East. But yeah, Gary Williams. Well done, sir.

When asked for response, Coach K glared at the throng of reporters, seven of whom were mysteriously injured. The rest fleed, and ACC media day ended early yet again.

The end.

Gary Williams couldn't coach a team of fish to swim. He is arrogant, out of touch and should retire to join the professional women's pinochle league.

Please name one coach who has won a national championship with a bunch of nobodies. Being a rabid Tarheel fan and alum, I admire a coach who can take a bunch of bottom feeders and turn them into champions. No one wants to go to Maryland. Repeat that and you'll see what a remarkable coach that guy is. If you think coaches who have a bunch of five star talent are great coaches, consider that their universities may be magnets for five star talent and the coaches great recruiters. I dare say that most any coach would take a team loaded with talent like Carolina and Duke and do well. Consider that Gary Williams has neither the school, nor the five star talent to compete, yet year in and year out, somehow he does it!

Nobodys? Juan Dixon, Chris Wilcox , and Steve Blake have good roles in the NBA. Lonny Baxter would still be in the NBA except for legal woes(shipping guns via Fed/Ex). 4 Players that cashed NBA checks is not a team of nobodys. Get your facts straight, turtlehead.

Gary is a decent coach, but he is a jerk and recruits know it. I've lived in the B-More/DC area my whole life, and each year I watch the top talent from this b-ball hotbed go elsewhere. when most of them are asked why they chose Cuse, Duke, UNC, UConn, K-State, etc., it is because they thought Gary was a scumbag and the other coaches were guys they'd like to play under. but at least Gary isn't trying to sleep w/ the female students and doing tons of coke anymore....oh wait...he is!
