Maryland. Duke. Not fans of each other, to say the least. The rivalry is what Los Angeles Times columnist Bill Plaschke might call a "thoroughfare of debate." [Language alert.] (Also: Wha?)
Among the two sides, Maryland has the upper hand in unrequited hate.
Few teams, or people, hate anything as much as Maryland people hate
Duke. And if you can maintain a safe distance from the screaming, it's
actually quite entertaining.
Enter Gary Williams. Williams, none too pleased about the rumors of his demise, took the first good jab of the college basketball media season at ACC media day. Some dudes with a blog named "Mister Irrelevant" -- never heard of them! -- have the details:
Fans will grumble that Gary needs to go, and then they’ll end up sixth or seventh in the best conference in the country and make the tourney. Best part of the media day was Gary’s quote about fans forgetting he won a national championship, “Some people think it is ancient history. It is not as ancient history as Duke’s last title” in 2001.
One correction: The ACC will not be the best conference in the country this year. I'm afraid that will go to the Big East. But yeah, Gary Williams. Well done, sir.
When asked for response, Coach K glared at the throng of reporters, seven of whom were mysteriously injured. The rest fleed, and ACC media day ended early yet again.
The end.
