It seemed a foregone conclusion when Duke announced that guard Elliot Williams would be transferring "closer to his Memphis home," and now we have the confirmation: Williams will indeed end up at Memphis. He will play point guard for Josh Pastner. He will be good.

The question now is when Williams will play. He's seeking a hardship waiver to the NCAA's usual transfer eligibility rule, which typically forces players to wait a year after they transfer before they can suit up for their new team. Williams' mother's sickness -- which Williams has declined to disclose (Gary Parrish's sources say the specific disease is cancer) would theoretically make that possible. It's within reason that Williams could be playing for Memphis as soon as this fall. (Come on, fall. Just happen already. Actually, can't we play basketball all year? Why the summer break? Who really likes that? Say it with me, people: I want more basketball, and I want it now! Let's protest this! Everybody get to Twitter! Bring your green hat!)

Anyway, Williams' eventual arrival in Memphis is no surprise. By Saturday, Williams had narrowed his choices down to Memphis, Tennessee, Vanderbilt and Kentucky, and while all four schools are within convenient distance of the greater Memphis area, only one would truly be a return home. It would have been baffling for Williams to transfer under the guise of wanting to be in his hometown and then ending up hundreds of miles away from Memphis anyway. No, there was only one outcome here.

The question I have is whether or not Williams always intended to transfer to Memphis. But in the end the answer doesn't really matter, does it? Williams will be a Tiger now -- that's a huge get for Pastner, a guard that can run his offense and that still has several years of eligibility ahead of him -- and the Tigers will be considerably better with him on the team. And Williams gets to live at home with his mom. Win-win-win.

Except, you know, for Duke. For them it's win-win-win-loss, with an emphasis on the latter.

    Memphis is a top 15 team now.
    Question? Over the last 3 years Memphis has not been ranked. Yet Memphis ended up 1,2, and 4th ranked team in the country by the end of the year.
    Why is not Memphis ranked in the preseason.
    Recruits --
    20th best player == Willaims
    10th best Juco
    Mac all america == Wilaims
    60th best (quess) == French Player
    And the UK player?
    Why is this not a top team????

    John memphis has been ranked in the pre-season every year that you mentioned but they have never ended the season with the number 1 ranking. To answer your question of why they are not a top team YET, is because they lost so much after last season and the seniors they have are no better than role players. Josh Pastner is doing a great job but this year is a rebuilding season.
