The strong relationship Archie Goodwin forged with Baylor coach Scott Drew apparently wasn't enough to overcome what the highly touted class of 2012 shooting guard didn't like about the program.
Goodwin's really not fond of Baylor's colors or its Adidas affiliation.
In an interview with Sync Magazine's Evin Demirel earlier this week, Goodwin explained why he recently narrowed his list to Arkansas, Kansas, Kentucky, Memphis and UConn. The Arkansas native eliminated Missouri and Texas because his relationship with their head coaches wasn't satisfactory, but his rationale for trimming Baylor was a bit more unconventional.
"Coach Scott Drew is a great guy. I love Coach Drew. They were one of the first schools that were recruiting me. But I didn't like that they were an adidas team, but that's not to say I wouldn't go to Kansas because Kansas is a great team. I can look over the adidas thing — I own some adidas stuff. [Goodwin played recent summers with the Arkansas Wings Elite team, which is sponsored by Nike] I didn't like their colors, either. I don't like green and gold. That's ugly …. When you got ugly colors like that, you gotta be Nike. …. Baylor has some ugly shoes, too."
Granted that's an awfully superficial reason for Goodwin to eliminate a program that was among the first to show interest, but his candor is refreshing in an age of canned quotes and politically correct opinions. And the No. 12 recruit in Rivals.com's 2012 rankings probably is not alone in thinking that Baylor's green and gold road uniforms and matching high tops aren't very flattering.
At least Baylor can take solace that its clashing color scheme hasn't prevented Drew from assembling some of the nation's best recruiting classes the past two seasons.
In 2010, the Bears signed 6-foot-11 forward Perry Jones, a consensus top 10 prospect in his class who averaged 13.9 points and 7.1 rebounds as a freshman last season. And this year's Baylor class includes five-star recruits Quincy Miller and Deuce Bello and top junior college point guard Pierre Jackson.

OpinionatedB, you giving that little scrub way to much credit, he was probably passed on in high school with a "c" average so he could get scolarship money. He will have plenty of test at his desposal to buy; I should know, even Cal Poly where the elite supposedly go were buying test left and right especially the jocks.
He has to make it through at least 4 years of college with a minimum gpa of 2.0. He also has to be part of the elite class of athletes who has the physical, mental, and emotional abilities to excel on the court in college, and one who can then take that even higher to the level required to play in the NBA. The odds are stacked against him ever making millions in the NBA. Chances are that with his immaturity and sense of entitlement he will fizzle out while in college, and if he makes it past college he will be lucky to play semi-pro basketball in Europe or China for a couple thousand a game.
He has a better chance of making a million dollars if he pursued academics over athletics, but I am sure he might find some of the text book colors offensive and may find it hard to succeed academically. His basketball numbers are high, but his academics were poor for his past three years of High School. This is why he was drafted under special review from the NCAA.
This is AMERICA people and the young man has his choice. Most of you hating on his decision must be from Baylor but you probably eliminated other schools for crazy reasons also. This kid is not a thug as some of you have posted and is a well mannered young man every time I've seen him in Arkansas. I'm unsure of Baylor's basketball tradition but one thing his short list of schools have in common is a National Championship Banner and/or plenty of players in the NBA. And on another note...last time I checked, Baylor IS NOT the #1 school to attend for a quality education. Educate yourselves to that and quit judging the young man. Archie...Do what you want!
haters gonna hate
well, He is shallow... but he DOES have to eliminate all but one school. when you can't make up your mind between 4 or 5, its time to start weeding them out by superficial reasons.
@ least he was honest & he has the right to his opinion.
if the child does not like the colors , then maybe she should stay home .
Granted there is very little information, BUT....if the quote is accurate, he probably shouldn't even be graduating.
Anyone here posting nasty stuff about this kid and judging him based on such little information, well, that's sounds a great deal like a kid judging a school based on it's team colors.
Best uniforms ever in any sport, san diego chargers 1960's
Baylor is the winner here. This thug monkey's IQ is smaller thatn his shoe size. Check out the HS National news. This zippy couldn't play at a good school because he's an idiot. Free ride and whines about brand names and colors. What a lil gansta wanna be...make me puke. How's he so tight on brand names and just a HS baller. Seems to me they better be checking this boy and his school out. Oh and get the blink count too.........
wonder what kind of education he is looking for. hope hes not counting on an nba major. sh-t happens and then you have to go to work.
LOOK AT THE BIG PICTURE, KID!!! A small mind that thinks like this about school colors is under developed and in need of cultivation. How is B Ball ever going to expand this child? He's doomed.
Anyone who assumes that this is the kids only reason for not choosing this school is dull. He has got options, you haters should get some and leave this kid alone. Maybe he will sign your shirt one day.
Stupid is as stupid does.
Baylor just save the cost of a 4 year private college tutor for this creten.
I swear every time I read a sports article on yahoo and it has something to do with a black athlete some of the most dumbest baseless comments are posted. If Baylor was his only option and he turned it down then that would be looking a gift horse in the mouth. This kid received several scholarship offers so if he snubbed Baylor because he doesn't like the colors he can do that. Are you really serious?
The kid has a what? 3.5 GPA along with being good at basketball? It's old hat that most athletes - hell most people - do things like this: judge something by color, smell, etc. My friend is in Iraq and refused to join the AF because they told him he couldn't wear his lucky Superman shirt under his uniform. Noone would see it, but he HAD to have it. Marines didn't have a problem with, and it works out well for both of them. You're all calling the kid stupid, but he's got enough balls to say what's on his mind. No bullshit speeches, no people thinking for him. How many atheletes won't play without special socks, or something of that nature? It's nothing stupid about it. He's got the choice and apparently the skill.
I'll bet he really doesn't like his color either. What a shame a person who really wants an education is denied because he or she cannot dribble a ball. And it.s on the tax payers dime. Take my part and give
it to someone who may do me some good in the future. This is a loser.
I'm sure that he also has to qualify academically like everyone else there, right? I mean, the guys going into geology, physics, music, literature... nobody begs for their attention. So I'm sure that to get into one of these intuitions, he has to go through the same academic procedures as everyone else. What? It doesn't happen that way?
Please people who speak only one language and who don't even speak it or write it well, leave this young adolescence alone. You are a disgrace to America, attacking a young man with so much hatred. Would you want anyone to do that to you or anyone related to you. I don't think so. Besides, stop calling black people dumb; most of you --speaking from experience -- are so backward, you have never even travel outside of your county, not to mention your state.
I swear every time I read a sports article on yahoo and it has something to do with black person when I scan down to read the comments some of the most ridiculous comments are posted. The article didn't say Baylor was the only school who offered him a scholarship and he turned it down because he didn't like colors. The article said it was one of many schools that offered him a scholarship but he scratched them off because he didn't like the colors obviously he has the option to do that. Give me a break are you the type of people to walk into a car dealership and allow a salesman to put you in something you don't find appealing if you have the options of course not. Many Colleges are picky about who they allow to attend their schools why can't he be. I wish all the Racist internet trolls would find something better to do you spend too much time worrying about things that really don't pertain to you where this kid go's to school or why he choose it is none of your business!!!
Sadly this is how young recruits are thinking. He's not checking out schools to see what kind of good education he can get. No doubt he'll be a one and done basketball player and never go to a class.
but green is the color of money!
why hate or insult this kid? He has lots of options for top basketball programs, he can only choose one, and Kansas, Kentucky or U Conn are all better.
The kid really needs to grow up.
