The Dagger - NCAAB

If people don't like Mike Krzyzewski's Duke program, there are a few reasons to be traced: Coach K's success over the past 20 years, his penchant for recruiting players that maybe seem a little bit too white-frat-boy for people's taste, incessant ESPN-bred media love for the program, all of that. And Coach K isn't exactly the most endearing guy. Whether or not you think those reasons are fair, those are the reasons most people would probably cite.

But there's also a certain moral superiority about Duke that rightly or wrongly has come to define the level at which Coach K wants to see himself. He doesn't do shady things. He only rarely deals with AAU types. He'll willingly lose out on recruits if it means keeping his hands clean. That's the perception Coach K has created; he's competitive, but not at the cost of doing the right thing (in so far as you can tell what the right thing is in college basketball recruiting anymore).

For those reasons, this comes as a surprise: Coach K is going to host his first-ever "elite" camp.

Elite camps are a modern recruiting invention designed to skirt a few NCAA rules, the primary one involving college recruits not being on campus for more than a few visits during their recruitment. That rule doesn't cover camps. Nor do NCAA rules prevent AAU coaches -- say, the AAU coach of a top recruit like, for example, Hamilton Barnes -- from coming to the camp and "teaching a seminar" and making out with a few thousand dollars in the process.

Plenty of schools do this, and it's not exactly illegal, but if you believe in a strict student-athlete code (in other words, if you're the NCAA) it is a bit unethical. Coach K has worked his entire career to seem ethical. An entire American Express marketing campaign was built around his coaching style preparing his players for life off the court. It's disarming to see him change his tune like this, to flip this switch in the face of recruiting pressures when he never has before.

You could spin this as Coach K simply catching up with the times. That he is. But he's also fading into his surroundings, and that's a little bit sad no matter your allegiance.

Eamonn: You can spin it any way you want to, but we all know that you have a man crush on coach K and the Duke players. We know this because there are 300 or so other teams to write about, yet each week, you post another piece of doo-doo about Duke. You always try to make it seem like you aren't bashing them, but you are nothing more than a hater. The funniest part about people like you, is that you make fun of Duke fans for being "frontrunners," however, it is so wildly popular to bash Duke, that those who do are actually the bandwagon jumpers. Once Duke is lucky enough to have some of that NBA talent that they recruit stay all the way through school and win another title, what will you have to write about then?

Much ado about incomplete information. Coach K has said NO AAU COACHES at his camp so that should shut down the innuendo and bogus cheap shots.

Duke has been spiraling out of control ever since their embarrassing loss by almost 20 points to emerging powerhouse Villanova.

WOW so much to comment on...first Drew "spiraling out of control" please Villanova will be back to the middle of the Big East in a few years with no titles to show for a few good years of talent and coaching. Also K has said no AAu coaches and who cares.. the same people who bash Duke for this camp are bashing them for bad recruiting over the past 5 years.

A-Davis: I am a hug Duke fan, but I have to correct you on one point; Nova isn't going anywhere. Jay Wright is a beast recruiter, and he has been pulling in some really strong kids from Philly, DC, and B-more. That program has money, a decent on campus facility, and a great off-campus, Big-East style pro court to play big games. It is a good school with hot chicks (which is rare), and they play on tv a good number of times each year. "The demise of Duke" story has been going on since 1995, so we should be used to it by now. Not to fear, Duke is headed in the right direction. Every team has some down years now and again (see Carolina right after Dean Smith left), but Duke's down years are 30 win seasons with an ACC title. So instead of being realistic, all the Duke haters repeat the same stuff over and over again.

It doesn't matter if they face Kentucky in the tourney they will get their ass stomped. And that is the only way they will meet because coach K is to afraid to start a series because Coach Cal has been trying like hell to get another good team to have a series with. Duke sucks coach K knows it that's way he is coaching team USA again.

You really must have a crush on Duke as John C pointed out. I never thought of it before but why else would you continually write about them? They don't write about you in the Chronicle. It must be because there is really nothing to write about.

Nice fact checking, buddy. For the record, HARRISON Barnes will be at Rucker Park's Elite 24 game on that weekend.
Seriously, can you even call yourself a journalist if you don't do any fact checking on that which is the focus of your article? Quit embarassing yourself.

Coach K hates for UNC to outshine his program, as they have in recent years. He'll do what he has to do to get attention. You wont see Roy pimping himself out like Coach K.

are you kiding me smooth w, roy william's would sell his soul, and his mama if he thought it would make him better then Duke. So coach K is having an elite camp this year, so what its nothing any other coach would not do (that includes mr williams). Truth of it as we all know is theres so many good teams out there now and really not enough good players you gotta do what you goota do, no matter who you are.

Duke Blue Devils - I love 'em. We are one of the most hated teams of all college basketball, because we have shattered so many teams dreams. But if you have been a fan since 1985, Yes, 24 years, you have had a great ride. No other school, except Kentucky and UNC can say they have had a great ride. And best of all the ride is not over yet. And thats what every one hates about coach K elite basketball camp. Everyone is afraid of another Duke Champion Title Team because we might do a repeat after that.

    Duke in the 2000s; 1 Nat'l Championship (2001), 2 Final Fours (01, 04) 7 Sweet 16's
Sounds like a "demise" many programs would be happy with
That being said Duke hasn't recruited a top level PG or a C in YEARS so clearly something needs to change (coaching staff maybe?)......the fact that Coach K would make such a concerted effort for John Wall tells me that he knows he's not getting good enough talent - he wouldn't have looked at the guy twice 10 years ago - so hopefully the camp helps with that
