Kyrie Irving is a top recruit that just committed to Duke. Adam Zagoria is the reporter who broke Irving's final commitment two days prior to Irving's official announcement, which was set to take place live on ESPNU. Recruitniks had assumed Irving was planning on heading to Duke for a while, but Zagoria's reporting seemed to make it official, and Irving was not pleased: He denied the decision and said he was still mulling things over, and, oh yeah, he'd let you know in two days on ESPNU.

Naturally, Irving chose Duke, and his refutation of Zagoria's story ended up being for no other reason than to push people to watch the ESPNU announcement. Clever marketing. Also kind of mean. So fellow reporters Seth Davis and Gary Parrish have come to an agreement: Irving needs to apologize.

From Davis:

Make no mistake: Kyrie Irving is worth the hype. He is the best guard Duke has recruited since Jay Williams, and he is a terrific student to boot. But since he has been playing the media game so deftly, he should do what a real media organization is supposed to do when it publishes something that's wrong: He should issue a correction. At the very least, he should apologize to Adam Zagoria. Unlike Kyrie, he got the story right.

From Parrish:

(Note: Credit SNY's Adam Zagoria with the scoop. He had this nailed two days ago, wrote it and had to deal with Irving refuting his story publicly . As a journalist, I can tell you there's nothing more frustrating than having an accurate story refuted. So it was nice to see Zagoria vindicated, and Irving probably owes him an apology via Twitter, at least.)

Rush the Court has an interview with Zagoria, and it's clear Adam isn't looking for any pity, so all's probably forgiven. And come on: Irving's not going to apologize. Still, it is a bit of a jerk move. Zagoria found information (that wasn't exactly a well-kept secret anymore anyway), confirmed it, and published it. In other words, he did his job. Irving has plenty of time in his career to host press conferences; getting mad at Zagoria for "ruining" this one seems incredibly short-sighted. But 18-year-olds can be shortsighted sometimes, I guess.

He's a kid and he wanted to make his announcement to the rest of the country a significant moment. I can appreciate the efforts of a journalist but there's absolutely no way he should be the one receiving the apology here, at all. I don't agree with the way Irving is being portrayed as short-sighted, or as a jerk for telling him no, he hasn't quite decided yet. "Refuting" is a part of many journalistic efforts and it's really not a big deal when he basically confirmed the story shortly after. Frankly you might expect that kind of reaction when you make the kid's announcement public for him a mere two days before he was ready.

You call it a "scoop" when someone guesses which lie that is being told happens to be the truth.

your the one who needs to apologize for bashing duke all the time. the only reason you wrote this is because he committed to duke
it was the kids moment let him announce.
i'd bet you'd be pretty angry if you were to propose to your future wife and your friend ruined your surprise

Of course, there's still the possibility that Irving legitimately was having second thoughts at the last minute.

Why not print the accurate story when the player's decision is officailly finalized? Why is this reporter trying report something before it actually happens. The media needs to lay off these kids. If reporters continue to put out "news" on childrens' futures we will end up reading "big scoops" on a 12 year-olds choice of college. Who cares about this stuff. It's like those 2 days when all we heard aout of ESPN was Sam Bradford is set to give a speech on entering the draft. Until he says he will enter the draft, DO NOT report it. Stop trying to predict the future, even if it is true some of the time.

You are such a dork, Eammon. Ice is correct, if this kid had committed to Indiana, or anywhere else, you wouldn't have bothered to write about him. Why don't you just admit that you want to make out with Shelden Williams, and we can all move forward.
Additionally, your profile picture is terrible. Your cromagnon brow and hair helmet make you look like an extra from Star Wars.

Oi..being a UK fan and following Kryie's recruitment since Cal arrived (with Kyrie's Godfather Rod Strickland in tow) I have been nothing but impressed with Iriving...sorry to have lost him, but it seems that Duke has a good one who will end up staying (by my guess) all 4 years in completing his degree and bringing Duke back to the championship game (vs UK I hope) which would be fantastic...nothing I like more than seeing these two schools battle...I remember being an 18 year old (many, MANY years ago) and I can understand a multitude of adults wanting to get "information" about what I'm doing...and me just telling them to piss off...(I think Kyrie did it a bit better than I would have done)...at 18, it was girls, music and my car....in that order....Zagoria did his job (and was correct...but Kyrie to Duke had been the standard line for the past 2 months--Duke, Duke and more Duke--so it really wasn't as if he had cornered the market on Irving's destination)...truly, the press needs to get off of their high horse...the kid doesn't OWE SH*T to anyone in the press, let alone a recruiting blogger...now, as a sidenote...can anyone from Duke please explain to me without getting pissy about why Ryan Kelly isn't being mentioned in this Brian Clifton AAU/oops, I was an agent and forgot to tell my players fiasco...from what I have read, the NCAA rule states that just playing for Clifton's AAU team (while he was an agent) is the reason for the Wall situation...my guess is that Kelly didn't play for Clifton's team at the time he was an "agent"...2007-2008...anyone

All three of this so called Journalists or bloggers are grown men saying a 18 year old HIGH SCHOOL student should apologize to this recruiting blogger who broke the news early? Did anyone think before they wrote this article? I mean come on, what editor signed off on this? The kid wanted his moment to announce HIS decision on where he wanted to commit. Saying he should "at least apologize on twitter" is just moronic. Irving has no reason to apologize, as this writer tried to break the news early on one of the biggest events so far in this kid's life. He really couldn't wait two days to break the story after Irving committed? This writers need to get a grip and realize these are high school students they are writing about, not professional athletes.

Alright, I don't think that KI needs to announce an official apology, thats a little over the top, but the fleece he has pulled over all of your eyes is incredible. Why is everyone defending a kid who despite all the great things everyone has to say about him, has done nothing but, admittedly doing so very politefully, do what is best for him and his dad. Every move they have made does not say 4 year player to me, it says 1 and done and I want my name huge in the NBA. While I am not faulting a kid with loads of talent wanting to go to the NBA, come on. Quit defending him for deny reports he knew were true just so maybe 10 more people would watch him on ESPN U. Quit the celebrity crap and go play basketball like a 'Hungry and Humble (cough cough Bull....)' warrior that you say you are. I'm sick of all the drooling that falls out of peoples mouths because hes more polished on twitter and other media outlets than some other recruits. I would almost prefer a cocky yet honest Derrick Rose approach of who cares how I got here, I'm good so pay attention, rather than a I'm so humble and blessed, but really I only care about getting my name out there.
