Roy Williams was anything but inconspicuous at last night's still-wrapping-the-dome-around-it National Title game. As if his halftime interview wasn't exposure enough, there he is, front and center, with a black turtleneck, glasses, and what appeared to be a Kansas Jayhawk sticker. Was that a sticker? It might just have been the design of the shirt. That was hard to figure out.

Questions about the apparel aside -- because really, who wears a sticker when they can buy a long-sleeve tee from the gift shop? -- Williams' show of support sparked a couple of quick Gchat conversations, which both went a little something like this:

Them: Whoa. Roy with the Jayhawk there. Not cool.
Me: Really? Why is that not cool?
Them: Because he just lost to Kansas. I doubt North Carolina fans will appreciate that much.
Me: Yeah, but he coached there for a gazillion years. Of course he's going to root for them.
Them: I wouldn't do it, is all I'm saying.
Me: Whatever. No one cares what you think, because you're not even a real person. You're an amalgamation of two or three people, paraphrased with swears removed.
Them: Now you're stealing from Chuck Klosterman. Hack.
Me: Go away.

After spending some time debating it again this morning, I'm still not sure I understand any supposed anger. Let me rephrase that: I do understand that it exists, and understand why. But I don't think it should.

Of course North Carolina fans have a right to be a little tweaked at seeing Williams, only two days after being blown out by Kansas, supporting Kansas, but can the majority of those fans not level with the gesture? For 15 years, the man patrolled the sidelines in Lawrence. He no doubt developed deep professional, emotional, and maybe even physical (perhaps there's a Jayhawk tattoo on Roy's upper thigh?) connections that only a few things in our lives ever warrant. There are comparisons here. If you go to undergrad at Michigan, and then graduate school at, say, Indiana -- and boy, your GPA must really have sucked -- do you suddenly ignore your ties to Michigan? You might root for the Hoosiers, or you might not, but I'm betting you at least keep some of your Michigan gear around the house. Now imagine if you worked at Michigan for 15 years, rather than four. See what I mean?

It doesn't make Roy Williams any less dedicated to his profession or to his current position to root for his former team. It doesn't make UNC's loss on Saturday any easier for their fans, I'd imagine ... but it certainly shouldn't make it harder. When Roy Williams took the North Carolina job, he didn't stop being Roy Williams, former Kansas coach. It's who he is. It's the sticker he wears. If, in fact, that was a sticker. Still not too sure on that.

Roy is a class act. I have no problem with him supporting his former team. And even less of a problem that he is at UNC in the first place. The man has a right to go home and he has been nothing but integrity his whole career. KU fans should take his lead in his support for this championship and remember all the great things from his time at Kansas instead of resenting him for going home to UNC.

I go to school here at UNC and haven't heard anyone complain about the Kansas sticker.

It's clearly a sticker, since the logo is rotated counterclockwise from the usual orientation. The 'KU' on the sticker is leaning to the left.
It's really not a big deal at all, but it sure is fun hearing all these Carolina fans cry about it (people at work are going ballistic). The only real issue is whether Roy's love for Kansas affected his own team's preparation (or lack thereof).

As a KU fan, I feel it is extremely classy of Roy to support the Hawks! After Roy left Lawrence I think the fans developed a love/hate relationships with Roy, so his support really shows Kansas fans that some of his heart is still with Kansas.

Hey UNC fans, it's a lot better than him leaving for another school the day after a final four loss!

The support from Williams was incredible. His team was out - his former team was in. Why shouldn't he cheer for them?
Maybe Self should think about donning a Fighting Illini sticker sometime....maybe the U of I fans here would hate Kansas less. Currently living in Illinois, I'm probably sealing my fate, but I must say it....Nah, Self was smart to leave Illinois and scoop up the amazing recruits Williams left him; besides, Illinois has nothing to offer right now unless Self wants to become the football coach (he may have a chance at that point).

Indiana has many excellent graduate programs, thank you very much. If you want to insult someone, insult Illinois.

Roy Williams is the highest paid state employee, he is paid by the University of North Carolina . He is a ambassador for the University not Kansas. I was taken aback when I saw him on TV. I hope he can explain himself but it was all over the news and radio talk today. I think it wouldn't have been so bad if he had on a Tar Heel color shirt but the sticker really stuck out for me. THe recruiting are going to be all over Roy wearing that shirt.

Bottom Line: Born and raised in North Carolina. Heels fan since I was seven. I love Roy and I love Carolina Basketball and our team. I get the gesture but not the best move in the world after you were out coached and didn't prepare us to play Kansas less than 48 hours before. Roy is a great coach and with the exception of what he did last night and not preparing us for Saturday he has done a great job. Bottom Line: If in 93 when he was coach at Kansas and lost to his mentor Dean Smith at the final four; The question is did he stick around Monday night in Carolina Blue to root for Carolina against Michigan? If he did I have no problem with the Kansas sticker. If he didn't I would fire him in a second. Don't care about the money or anything else. If he rooted for Kansas as Carolina coach and didn't root for Carolina in the Championship as Kansas coach; I have no more respect for him and no other true Carolina fan should. If he was there in 93 I'll shut up and apologize and everyone else should drop it as well.

Flashback to 1993: KU playing under Coach Roy Williams loses in the Final Four to his mentor and coach, Dean Smith and the Tarheels. Roy and the Jayhawks stay on in New Orleans to watch (and root for) NC beat Michigan for Smith's second National Championship. Upon returning to a football stadium of jubilant fans in Lawrence on the following Tuesday (fans proud of a team that was one of the last four in the tourney even if they did lose) Roy comments that he had the immense pleasure of watching his alma mater play for and win a National Championship the night before and that he hoped that he could give KU fans the same feeling in the future.
What I don't see in my flashback are any Jayhawk fans throwing a hissy fit over their coach rooting for the team that beat them 2 days later. Grow up! Get over it! Rock Chalk!

Seriously, guys, this is ridiculous. He's a human being showing support for a place he called home for fifteen years. It's not like he tried to make his team lose to Kansas in the Final Four - THAT would have been unforgivable. But the Kansas team is made up of guys HE RECRUITED, played in an area he prowled for a decade and a half. I have no problem with him rooting for the Jayhawks to win once his team was bounced. And Chad, don't get me started on how this will play on the recruiting trail; the top recruits aren't going to stay for four years for a variety of reasons, but they're the last ones who should be lecturing anyone on loyalty.

I'm happy Roy wore the sticker. It healed a lot of hearts here in Lawrence. But I did want to add, the team that won the National Championship was NOT recruited by Roy Williams. It was all our GREAT coach!
