The public is just now finding out that Memphis may have used an ineligible player -- that player likely being star guard Derrick Rose -- in its 38-win season and run to the NCAA title game in 2007-08. Andy Katz is reporting that Memphis knew far earlier. All the way back in May 2008, the Tigers got a letter from the NCAA stating that Rose's test scores from Simeon High School had been invalidated. Katz has confirmation from Memphis' legal counsel, Sheri Lipman, who says, "[...] for the student-athlete, whoever that was, the first indication that we got was in early May [2008] that his score was being invalidated."
Lipman wouldn't identify the athlete to Rose, but that's where Katz's two most interesting details (far more interesting than finding out that Memphis knew about all of this much sooner than we did, which, you know, of course they did) come in.
One: According to Katz's sources, Rose's camp admitted that Rose took the SAT in question. Whether or not they admitted they cheated on the exam; or had a cleverly made answer form at the ready; or made that one kid on the basketball team that's a really good student even though he doesn't ever seem to have to try that hard take it; or stood over Rose's shoulder and guided him through it, like your friend's mom, whom you really resented for doing all her son's homework and getting him in a couple of honors classes isn't specifed. (Are we still talking about Derrick Rose, or my high school's academic issues? I don't know!)
Detail number two:
According to a source, Calipari was floored that Rose could have been ineligible as a freshman. So, too, was the university's legal counsel, which is fighting the NCAA over finding out about the "student-athlete's" invalid test score, after the season concluded and after he had been cleared by the NCAA clearinghouse to compete the previous fall.
If true, this sort of clears Calipari, right? If there's sufficient evidence -- and "a source" telling Andy Katz something isn't that, but it's a start -- that the program was blindsided by the notion of an ineligible SAT after the fact, that bodes well for Calipari. It's far better than there being some inkling that Calipari knew about the test, or had a staff member aid Rose in beating the test.
It's important to remember that Memphis sources have every reason to lie for Calipari; they're currently in the process of trying to keep their program as NCAA sanction-free as possible. But at the very least, this sounds like plausible deniability. Wondering why Calipari wasn't named in the NCAA's letter of allegations? This is probably why.
Or maybe they just admire John's hair. Let's not rule anything out.

The competitive nature of college sports is insane, in our state we have UK and UofL fighting for supremecy.
Don't forget the schools that made the NCAA that are from Kentucky..... Morehead State and Western KY.
Is the need for winning pushing UK in risking hiring a coach with an iffy reputation? Is the success of the UofL athletic program pushing UK to go for it?

What success, exactly? One Final Four?

The whole point is most people i see make these comments about Memphis/Calipari never even took the test themselves, remember a score of their own child,...or even their own! This is in NO WAY a knock on anyone who hasnt taken the test AT ALL. THE BOTTOM LINE is no one asks the conditions of the test? How big was the room? Did you get a break during the test? Blah Blah,...so on and so on. ALL ANYONE CARES (Including the NCAA, Compliance Offices everywhere, coaches, fans, boosters, sports meida, parents, etc.....) ABOUT IS IF YOU PASSED THE TEST!! Some parents dont even care about the score as long as you made it to college!? Soo why would Cal/Memphis know the "conditions" of the test Derrick Rose took (IN CHICAGO) and have a hand in making it happen?? If alligations are true,...not only was the test fraud,...but also grades were changed(IN CHICAGO) and phony transcripts were sent out as well. Soo Cal/Memphis also did this as well huh? Oh wow.... And to top it all off the guy that supposedly took the test for Rose and Flowers(the other young man accused),....is now sitting in prison for crimes he committed (involving a handgun) shortly after they all graduated. Not saying this means much about this young man,....just not the "deep throat" witness you want,... a felon whose story only benefits him. I would be upset too if i was sitting in prison while my ex teammate (that i alledgly took a test for to) go from ashy to classy overnite.....
Finally,...in no way am i trying to defend Cal/Memphis....im only stating fact as we know it. I know this week in sports has been dead and the NBA Finals will be over soon (Go Magic! lol) ,...but this is lame. You guys are as emotional as teenage girls...be real and be a man about it. Cal nor Memphis will 'go down' for any of the alligations(basketball related). If anything this is a black eye on the NCAA and The Chicago Public School system in which all the issues above occured. Its best you guys keep venting and get it all out now because this fall im sure Kentucky will be steam rolling a team near you. ........Now thats "The Dagger" ..............

UofL at least reached the NCAA tournament in the men's field, UK had to go to the NIT.
The UofL women surprised all and reached the women's final
UofL baseball is once again heading to a Super Regional and two years ago was in the CWS.
Track and Field, Golf, Tennis, Women's Rowing..... UofL's athletic dept. is doing their job.
Mitch might have the fans support with hiring Calipari and I commend him for going out and getting a proven winner. I just hope that he doesn't do to them what he's done to UMass and what's about to happen to Memphis.

The "slimeball" in all of this is the media.

Calipari will be found totally innnocent in this as the NCAA has already stated he isnt implicated in any wrongdoings, but dont let that get in the way of media writers taking advantage of a fanbase that will defend their program to the point of actually hurting themselves by responding to these closed minded idiots in the media who dont deal in facts, just agenda.

Eric R "I just hope that he doesn't do to them what he's done to UMass "
What he do to Umass? Was a middle man for Camby and the agents? Nope. Maybe if he didn't recuit Camby to Umass then all be fine but then they wouldn't of had a final four anyways. Do you even know what happened at Umass? Do you know how many games they had to take off the record books? answer is the 4-1 ncaa tourny in 96. Not the A-10 tourny nor the season, nor the previous seasons. Do you know what your child/gf./wife/friends do 100% of the time? nope, so why should we think a coach knows where and what the players do 100% of the time??

I don't think he knew. I am not a fan of Coach Cal, but weren't the test scores invalidated after the fact? So even Derrick probably forgot and assumed he had gotten away with it.... "
Best post on the thread.

People want him to be dirty because that is the only way they can explain why he is such a good recruiter. It couldn't be that his system appeals to the players, he relates well with the players, or that he is just a fun coach to play for. That still couldn't explain how he gets so many top recruits at places like UMASS and Memphis, so he gets the reputation of dirty because people can't believe he got who he got where he was at. Maybe if he had always been at UK, UNC, Duke, UCLA, Kansas, or another big school he would just be another great coach, but because he did what he did at "mid-majors" dirty is the only explanation people can come up with.
One thing is sure he will have no problem recruiting top 3 classes year in and year out at UK, but will finally turn one of those classes into a national championship?
