The Dagger - NCAAB

Like a president doling out his last minute pardons, or a deposed dictator making one last shameful cash grab, the lame-duckiness of Dan Dakich's situation apparently does not affect him. Dakich, in last night's surprising addition to the hilarious saga that is IU basketball this season, kicked guard Armon Bassett and forward Jamarcus Ellis off Indiana's team.

The entire situation is incredibly weird: according to this report in the Indianapolis Star, the two players missed a meeting that they weren't allowed to miss, which is not something one should be doing but which is not at all grounds for dismissal. According to the Bloomington Herald-Times, Dakich wanted the players to run sprints, and they told him they wouldn't, another act of insubordination that's not exactly polite but which isn't grounds for getting the long boot goodbye, either.

Of course there's more. Both players had disciplinary issues under former coach Kelvin Sampson that caused them to miss games, and those issues were never revealed. So Dakich's sudden curb-kicking was seen by some last night as an administration cleaning house by using a surrogate lame-duck coach to do so; all the while Dakich gets coaching cred among Indiana's conservative faithful for clearing the team of troublemakers. It would have fulfilled all that nonsense that IU people -- and North Carolina people, and others -- believe about  their unique basketball "culture" and "doing things the right way." (Gag.) That would probably have made the most sense. But then there's this report, which claims both players are trying to maintain their eligibility and come back with a new coach. Maybe they're just engaging in a little wishful thinking. Or maybe they were told by the administration they'd have a second chance once IU completes its (equally embarrassing) coaching search.

If that's the case, it means at least one thing about Dan Dakich: the man has Sam Cassell-esque huevos. Onions, as Bill Raftery might say. To know, within a matter of weeks, that you will no longer be the coach at IU and to still kick IU's two most valuable players off the team, leaving the cupboard literally bare for whoever eventually decides they want to coach in this circus, well, those are balls that John Wayne could envy. Either Dakich is working on behalf of his administration in cleaning house, or he just don't give a motherflip. Either way, IU looks pretty stupid.

good job, i am all for a coach that does that, if he doesn't he loses the respect of the team and then has nothing
and as for the two players first you miss a mandatory meeting then you cant even take your punishment which is pretty light considering it is just running laps you deserve to be kicked off cause you can't handle responsibility

Gotta love the guy!!! Time to clear out the miscontents and start fresh. Hope Dakich gets a real job at a college that teaches integrity... Anyone other then me think that no personality Bob Knight hopefully is finished as a TV commentator, let alone a coach?

Not sure how Bassett and Ellis all of a sudden are Indiana's 2 most valuable players? Seems like those voting on All Americans thought Eric Gordon and D.J. White were better..........

I'm sitting in class at Indiana University right now. This is some pretty shocking news, although I'm not too surprised with those 2 guys. There is definitely more to the story than is being reported, and I could almost gaurantee that Dakich was working on behalf of the administration when he dismissed Bassett and Ellis. Next year is gonna be rough.

    Good job coach!
It's about time someone shows these kids the right way to do things.
More coaches should do the same thing.

I support Dakich. IU may look foolish, becuase Administration but not because of Coach Dakich. IU needs to decide if they want to return to bball greatness and commit to that end by landing "the right coach."

I thought this was college sports and the most important reason for the teams (and the excuse for not paying the players) was that teaching life lessons was the priority of every coach. Certainly anyone who intentionally misses a mandatory meeting would be fired from a real job, so what is different here. Good job by Dakich and I would guess that administration would not allow the kids back on the team even if the new coach wanted them, although you never know with these people nowadays.

It takes character to do your job the same way whether it's your first day or your last. Kudos to Dakich for showing some old school work ethic.

Coach Dakich did the right thing. His former boss, Bob Knight, did not put up with any crap from his players. Coach Dakich and Coach Knight have the same belief regarding there players, your hear to get an education first. If they cut class or got into trouble, they were kicked off the team.
I U administration knew Samson had a bad track record and they still hired him. What an embarrassment to I U and the basketball program over the Samson ordeal. Hopefully they will give Dakich a chance, he knows basketball and he also is knows what Hoosier basketball success means to the state of Indiana.

Indiana basketball went down the tubes after Knight left. They didn't know it when they had a good thing, and the NCAA in its infinity wisdom promulgated that insane rush to judgment. Knowing what we do now about IU, no wonder Kinght was slightly off center at times and no wonder he left so easily for the Texas prairies....I have it from peopel who know Knight pesonally he is a wonderful man - an image contrary to waht the press says and what the NCAA in its infinite wisdom says...and the NCAA in its infinite wisdom is roflitstutusoff... Hats off to Coach Dakich for being honorable not to mention living up to the legacy of Bobby Knight.

Its does not matter that hes not going to be the coach what matters right now, he is the coach until they tell him hes not. Therefore he must command respect at all times as a coach. The two players disrespected his authority as coach because the administration gave them the green light to disrespect him by saying they were looking for another coach.

This whole mess goes back to one person... MILES BRAND. He single- handedly ruined IU basketball because he could not stand it that a basketball coach got more attention than he did. And now being the head of the ncaa hes still not doing IU any favors... I'm sure he will throw his little rule book right at IU even though IU fired Sampson. Oh and Brennen I got your (Gag) right here... IU does pride itself on "doing things the right way" but that is probably something you would not understand.

That is a really lame article. I guess IU should consider it a compliment that they look pretty stupid. It is the ole double negative thing, you know. Oh, I doubt if you would understand.
Dakich did the right thing, at least from your article...
Doing things the right way (Gag). What a crock of BS that is. Yeah, let's cheat, kiss butt, let the inmates run the asylum. Give me a break.
But best of all is that Bassett and Ellis are IU's MVP's. Get a clue!

Dakich does it the INDIANA way and needs to be hired Greenspan and Administration thought if they won games all hoosier fans would be happy. Let me inform them we want to win and hate losing but when we do win we take pride in knowing we did it right we may lose 5 years in a row but the year we win we know we did it honestly and right give us someone who understands that and you will have us all back time for administration ti grow up and quit worrying about trying to bury KNIGHT and his influence and accept the fact he taught us the right way to win.He has moved on IU'S Administration has not. HIRE DAKICH HE IS WHAT INDIANA STANDS FOR.

IU hates prosperity. It won't matter, with Gordon turning pro it'll take a new coach a few years to make them relavent again. So, trying to catch Purdue, The Ohio State Univ., Wisconsin, & Michigan State again is a pipe dream, at best

Whoever thought that the once-vaunted Indiana program would be a national laughingstock? Shame on everyone associated with the university. I once counted myself as a proud alumnus. Lately, I have referred to my M.A. university as my alma mater.
