This video is nothing particularly special, except for those of you similarly entranced by Wisconsin's swing offense. But if you are, this 40-ish seconds of Badger pass-and-move is an interesting little thing:
That was Raftery's breakdown from last night, after Bo Ryan's Badgers held out for a tough win over Miami. As bruchu at the X's and O's of Basketball says, "Isn't motion offense just a beauty to watch? It's really like watching a great play, with all the actors moving with a purpose."
I'll be honest: I never thought about the swing that way before. To me, watching the swing offense is often the opposite of witnessing beauty. As an overall specimen, it feels like there is a ton of wasted motion, a ton of cuts that never work, a ton of passes simply for the sake of "moving the ball." In comparison to the Princeton offense -- which relies on aggressive backcuts and screens away from the ball, or the dribble-drive, which utilizes superior talent and does exactly what its name implies at breakneck speed -- the swing actually seems sort of wasteful. Why are all these guys running around? Why don't they get to the basket? Create separation! This is boring!
Upon further examination, of course, that explanation is more than a little simplistic. All of those cuts do mean something; all of them are headed somewhere that serves some larger purpose within the scheme. Of course they do. It's just that sometimes you need watch in slow motion -- preferably with Bill Raftery's rasp on top -- to get your head around it.
As for beauty? Well, come on. That's all subjective, son. But let's just say I'll take the dribble-drive any day. Anarchy can be pretty, too.

You'd rather watch hot, ripped guys dunk over each other than watch a team of lesser athletes prevail consistently year after year after year. It's ok to feel that way.
