The Dagger - NCAAB

Mike Krzyzewski doesn't like it when his Duke team gets disrespected by referees, poll voters or the media. Now he can add "leader of the free world" to that list.

Responding to an Associated Press reporter's question about Barack Obama picking against Duke in his much-hyped tournament picks which were broadcast on ESPN today, Krzyzewski said:

"Somebody said that we're not in President Obama's Final Four, and as much as I respect what he's doing, really, the economy is something that he should focus on, probably more than the brackets."

It's rare that I agree with Coach K, but I do here. And, in doing so, I also have to say that as much as I respect what he's doing at Duke, really, making it to the Sweet 16 for the first time in three years is something that he should focus on, probably more than responding to someone having enough common sense to pick against his overrated team.

There's some chatter that Coach K was speaking in jest, but the AP reporter mentioned nothing about post-comment laughter and Krzyzewski has been long known to take subtle pot-shots at those he is at odds with. The West Point graduate hosted a fundraiser in 2002 for Republican Senator Elizabeth Dole, but received congratulations from Obama after coaching the U.S. basketball team to a gold medal in Beijing.

Krzyzewski's former player, Reggie Love, is the president's "body man" and his presence may be required to broker peace between the warring factions should Duke win the NCAA tournament, thus earning a trip to the White House.

Thanks, CNN

Maybe Coach K needs to focus on Binghampton rather than looking at our President's brackets. And he hadn't noticed NOBODY has Duke in their Final Four!!!!!!
I guess we know who he didn't vote for!!!

As if I needed another reason to hate Duke. Let the Prez flaunt his b-ball knowledge.

Besides, how long does it take to pick a bracket? 10 minutes tops?

This conveniently cuts off the end of the quote, which says he was laughing at the time.

Well, I'm sure you great basketball minds (UNC) will boo Duke tomorrow in the normal classless fashion. It would be nice if you guys could get over yourselves and pull for your conference for once. I'll still be cheering for UNC, even if you don't.

i will clearly be picking against our beloved president, not because i like duke but because he has already proven that he is an imbecile.

Some clowns at www.heymanwhatsup.com have a mouse and a magic 8 ball picking a bracket. They have footage of the mouse making its picks. Its a hoot - and his bracket looks a little like the President's.

AWWW!!! Coach K's feeling are hurt because Obama doesn't have Duke in his Final Four! Well at least he has Duke in his Elite 8. That's two rounds more than where I have them. So is Coach K is gonna diss me (and thousands others) as well?

typical. take a joke from a press conference, where the speaker and the audience are laughing, and make it into a hot button political item where people can mix their feelings over two of the most divisive things in this country: politics and duke basketball. go to the nytimes blog where this was reported: it was a joke.

I think Coach K has a point. It was obviously a crippling blow to our economy for the president to spend ten minutes filling out a bracket. I'm sure we can all agree that our economic situation would have been solved in that period of time had the president really applied himself.
You know how every once in a while you catch yourself taking sports too seriously? Yeah.

You are Blah - CNN is very good at this. Their website has the most deceiving headlines in the business. They are really hurting their credibility. If Coach K said this in a sarcastic manner, there's obviously a huge difference.

It takes 5 minutes to fill out a bracket. There is nothing that can be done in five minutes to fix this mess, so why not let him fill out a bracket. This is a mountain made out of a molehill.

By the way, my previous 'taking sports too seriously' comment was not directed at Krzyzewski, but rather at Chase for agreeing with him.

I love how these people are getting so mad at Obama just because he took a few mins. to fill out a bracket. Bush wastes a couple of million dollars to fly with the Air Force and no one says a thing. At least Obama doesn't put on a persona like Bush did when he claimed to be a Texan and then RIGHT AFTER his presidency, sold his ranch, hat and all.

When I look at Obama's bracket and I assumed that took him 10-20 minutes to decide because he just rush Memphis to Final Four. Coach K should've wait to make comment after a win prove him wrong!

I'm not sure if this was an attempt for humor from coach K but playing the devil’s advocate here. I've lost some respect for the man if the statement is in truth. Never really liked Duke because they are the media's darling but always respected and admired Coach K as a coach and man. That opinion has chanced if this report holds water

Obama really needs to focus on other things than worry about basketball and the NCAA BBall pickem. Sorry guys, there is too much going on that his administration needs to handle, so in this case, as much as I hate Duke, I've got to say that Coach K is correct. He's a basketball coach and does this for a living so he should be concerned and involved. Obama needs to stop talking about "change" and actually do something about it...Sorry guys, but Coach K is correct in this scenario.

Chris Chase is the bomb! President Hussein and Reggie "Teabag" Love need to get off the leather couch in the oral office, stop watching the Presidential flat screens, stop shooting hoops, hanging out with celebs, appearing on Jay Leno, and start doing some work! Nobama is a complete joke! He walks around like he is Will Smith on the red carpet. His stupid wife is on the cover of every magazine in the world, showing off her arms!! What the heck is going on here? All the people who voted for him are losing their jobs and he is single-handedly destroying the wealth of the people who could actually pay for the unemployment checks he needs to give to the people who voted for him. This country is going to heck in a hand basket and all President Hussein can do is fill out his bracket on TV and root for the tarholes?
