The Dagger - NCAAB

Because the summer after a presidential election has to be a pretty boring time to be a pollster, a North Carolina polling company recently surveyed ACC basketball fans about their opinions of Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski. Somewhat surprisingly, fans of the other Tobacco Road schools (North Carolina, North Carolina State and Wake Forest) collectively had a favorable opinion of the man whose teams inspire so much ill-will from opponents.

Almost 53 percent of non-Duke basketball fans had a favorable opinion of Coach K (53 percent from UNC, 53 percent from Wake and 51 percent from State). The unfavorable ratings ranged from 12 to 23 percent. (Remarkably, eight percent of Duke basketball fans said they had an unfavorable opinion of Krzyzewski, which just goes to show that eight percent of people are idiots.)

Initially, these results seem startling because of how much Coach K seems to be despised nationally. But, as Dean Debnam, president of Public Policy Polling said:

"The average fan respects the other team's coach, but not surprisingly the few who do have a lot of ill will toward their rival are louder about it and attract more attention."

Yeah, people who do that sort of stuff disgust me

I give Coach K a hard time, but it's mostly in jest. (OK, it's somewhat in jest. It riled me up just looking through pictures of him to find for this post.) On the court, I can't stand him. I could write a book about why, but basically he's turned into everything he used to hate about Dean Smith. But I, like most rational ACC fans, still respect the man.

Oh, I'll curse his existence multiple times during college basketball season, but that sort of enmity is reserved for the basketball court (and those smarmy post-game press conferences). From what I read and hear, Mike Krzyzewski the man is as good as Mike Krzyzewski the coach.

It's always assumed that most people can't separate the two. Judging by that poll, I think they can.

I’m a lifelong Terp fan, and I must say I COMPLETELY despise Coach K....... on the court. But I do respect the man and what he represents off the court. (I almost threw up saying that)

I can relate as a kentucky fan all my life that bleeds blue, the coaches I respect the most are the most bitter rivals, Coach Bobby Knight comes to mind very quick and even though they arent a rival in the normal sense who can argue that Ky and Duke dont put on some pretty good games against each other. Anyways true fans respect great coaches reguardless of how we feel about their particular school......I hate Duke with great passion, but coach K
    has my respect.

having worked with various coaches for charity events, i can say that k is cordial, but not necessarily friendly of the court. roy williams and bill self however might be the nicest guys you'll ever meet.

Forget about it. Coach K gets no respect from me. We haven't mentioned the fact that he teaches his players to flop around on the ground like Latin soccer players, trying to deceive the officials into calling non-existent fouls. Drawing charges is one thing, but taking dives without contact (which Duke does repeatedly every game) is different (and deplorable). It's cheating. Anyone who's seen Mighty Ducks knows that.

i agree whole heartedly with James H...Wilson is a moron...learn the rules...you can flop all you want on the court...its up to the referees to determine if its a charge, block or a no call. just goes to show you ignorance is not bliss. go win a national championship or a gold medal then decide if any cares if you have respect for the man or not.

As a UK fan, I don't hate him. I do however hate Duke as a whole and Laettner can kiss my shiny white a**! And for whatever reason, I kinda liked Grant Hill and I really liked Bobby Hurley. Most of the other players through the years, kinda luke warm I guess. No hate, no love.

I agree with Wilson, with the flopping comment...not to mention his excessive riding of the Ref's...I understand that's a part of coaching, but he takes it way overboard...He most certainly doesn't get my respect!!!

Those that don't respect coach "k" need to learn more about the man. just because he's one heck of a coach and wins a lot of games is not a reason not to respect the man. for that matter any man!

I'm a lifelong UCLA fan, but I have a lot of respect for Coach K. The man has won 3 NCAA Championships without any scandals, probations or questionable actions. That alone should demand the respect of true basketball fans.

I'm a UNC grad and I've taken plenty of shots at Coach K and the Dookies over the years, but I don't see how any knowledgable college Bball fan doesn't respect his achievements. He's a great coach, however, it is so much easier to write those words now than when I was at Carolina ('98-'02).

i am a diehard carolina fan but have the utmost respect for coach K.. any team who plays against the blue devils knows he will get the very best effort from his team.. so when the Tarheels beat Duke we have not only beat one of the best teams in the country but the best coach and when they beat us we know its been a game and we lost to a good team and coach... coach K has inspired many an opposing team and coach to play the best they can possibly play... so from a Tarheel fan to Coach K i say keep up the great job you are doing , it just makes us want to be better.

I have had enmity for Coach K since I matriculated to Maryland, but the edge has come off as time has gone by and I can appreciate how good a coach he is. It also helped that he led the national team to the gold medal in Beijing.

As a UNC fan, it took me a long time to come to respect Coach K. Frankly, I just didn't like the guy. But after 2003 and the disgraceful mess Carolina made with ousting Doherty, I came to appreciate some of the stability and longevity Coach K had lent to Duke's program. Finally I was beginning to see him as a great coach, a man who really knew the game, and a worthy adversary.
Right up until March 4th, 2007 when that 'worthy adversary' implied that Tyler Hansbrough deserved to get his nose broken for still being on the court with 15 seconds left in a 12 point UNC win over Duke. Isiah Thomas had said practically the same thing earlier that year to excuse a Knicks brawl and was rightfully called an idiot for it. No sympathy for Coach K from me anymore. He's an ass, just like Knight.

I'm a huge Duke fan and am glad to see some Tarheel fans admit respect for Coach K. It works both ways. During basketball season there may be nothing I hate more than UNC, but it's a hate-respect thing.
To my knowledge the only coach that might deserve to be hated is Rick Pitino. Some of my family members have had encounters with him years ago when he coached Boston University and later when he was with the Celtics. All of their stories just point out that he is really just a jerk. His success on the court in college deserves respect, but as a man he is a joke.

I vote what most people are saying, Coach K, sorry, i mean crying K, a great coach is not someone who thinks his team never commits fouls, and are always fouled upon, but when You look at boxscore after boxscore, Duke and crying K always have less fouls called, sometimes You can look and 5 minutes into 2nd half they have a total of 8 FOULS! Seriously?! And he stills crys! And duke is known for pressure basketball, but they never foul, ha-ha, okay crying K, I hate duke too and thee calls they get and thee calls they get and thee calls they get. Keep crying K

I bleed the Royal Blue of Kentucky and I was raised not to hate anyone. Now dislike is a better term for me to use in this sense. I have a great dislike for many teams; most of all the Laettner led Duke teams. I dislike Duke because of its players like Laettner and his ilk, because of their personalities on and off the court. This reflects back onto Their Coach, I'm afraid to say. He is supposed to be one of the Premier Coaches in this nation, but he churnes out arrogant, obnoxious players. Therefore, it is very hard for me to seperate the dislike appropriately. As far as Respect, it is earned and not a given. True, Coach K has earned the Respect of many of fan of the game of basketball. But, where I come from, he has shown little respect for us and in turn gets the same treatment back at him. With Coach Cal running the ship now at UK, he wants a UK/Duke matchup. Most in the state want to see this game. It would be a great marketable event for college basketball as well as the individual schools. But, a yearly game with Duke takes the luster out of meeting them every once in a blue moon in the NCAA tourney. In which we both usually play out hearts out because it is for all the marbles. In the end, most people including myself feel Coach K is a good person and a great Coach. So, that being said, then enough said.....

With all the cheaters and peacocks out there coaching college basketball it's nice to know that there's somebody that can win the right way and develop kids into fine young men at the same time. If my kid was good enough to play at that level there's no program I'd rather see him choose.

Wow, I guess the idiots that complain about Duke "Flopping" know nothing about basketball and "Help Defense." The best teams use this strategy in order to win basketball games at any level. I would rather see a player give himself up to be run over than anyone dunking over someone. Coach K is a respectable man on and off the court and prepares his players for life off the basketball court as well as on seeing as most of his players do not make the next level at the NBA.
