The Dagger - NCAAB

If you're like me, you watched last night's Carolina-FIU game in glassy standard definition, which, because of some weird aspect ratio-related defect in my TV, looks even more covered in Vaseline than usual. Switching back to HD was like taking off bifocals. It was beautiful.

So it was hard for me to notice the pretty cool little details North Carolina added to their throwback uniforms in celebration of 100 years of UNC basketball. They (the details) were subtle, but swathed UNC players in a color most modern UNC fans would be slightly horrified by: red.

These are UNC's 1957 throwbacks, which, yes, included a dash of red on the waistline and in the jersey trim. Perhaps ESPNU broadcaster Jason Williams -- former Duke guard Jason Williams, mind you -- said it best "The bookstores in Chapel Hill are going to be sold out of those. I might have to stop by and get me a pair." If even a Dukie can appreciate your gear, you know you're looking good.

I don't think that's the jersey, I think that's his boxers just coming over his shorts...

The Uni's were cool, but the turnovers were not. The Heels need to tidy up a bit if they really want to beat the likes of Ohio State, Michigan State, Kentucky, and Texas. All of whom they play in the next month and change.

The team that took the floor last night does not deserve a top 10 ranking. They don't deserve a top 25 ranking. Beating FIU, a bad team with a new coach and zero stars, by only 16 points, while committing that many turnovers, was an embarrassment. And these talented new freshman showed little signs of life, save for the halftime buzzer beater. Strickland and Henson appear to be duds, and unless this team develops in a hurry, so will be UNC's season.

Early season games are there for a reason. Look at Michigan State for a perfect example, they usually drop at least 10-20 spots in the rankings every year before conference play. At the end of conference play, they usually have regained their top ranking and go far into the tourney.
There are plenty of ranked teams right now that look like they should finish at the bottom of their conferences but they won't. especialy UNC, Roy Williams will have them playing top tier basketball soon enough just give the young guys a couple games.

in 2008, by far my best investment was Carolina bball tix. I am sure they will "outperform" again this year. (disclaimer - I am an ardent Virginia fan, and buy the tickets only because I live in CH and have access)

I love my boys in blue, but common guys.... Last night was sad. No excuse in the sloppy play. Just because you were national champs last year does not mean you can ride the coat tails of that group. You need to step up, and step up quick. Should m=have mopped the floor with FIU. As for the uniforms, I am sad to say I did not even notice. Love my heels!

I am glad it's my time to post a comment as I am not at all happy with what I am hearing. First off, the heels this year aren't the same heels from last year except for a few newcomers and some that sat on the bench. Sloppy play, well yes you dingbats, it can be expected this time of year from any team. I dont care who you are. Do you think that Roy Williams is that stupid? I am sure during the practices this week there will be some major drills and correction going on. Also, did he not put his 2nd and 3rd strings on the floor? Give me a friggin break people. NO! The Heels will not win as many games this year as last but hold on to your hats because another final four is on the horizon but maybe not this year. All I have to say is... Don't be fooled.

Can you tell me any other program that can put out a team as good as last years once, let alone every year. Roy's boys will be in top form when it counts. You know tounament time. I was there for Tyler's first game, and he sucked. Look what that team went on to do. Give those guys a break. Could you go into the DEAN DOME for your first collegiate game and not be a little overwhelmed.

UNC will be fine. They have not played enough or gelled together for their first game. They have new players and the freshman no matter how good they are must adjust to Carolina basketball. Don't forget they have one of the best basketball coaches on this side of heaven not taking anything from The Dean but Roy Williams is a heck of a coach. Go Heels!

Trhowback uniforms, my foot! They may have had a bit of red on the waistband, but (with a limited view in the photo,) they appear to be the same girly-boy pants that have infected sports for way too long. Put the men in men's pants, and I won't give a flip about the colors. As they are, red or not red at the waist, they are throw up dresses. Of course, that corresponds with the pathetically low scores that have characterized college and NBA hoops ever since the advent of the 3-point shot.
