Creating a NBA draft TV analysis team requires, as Zinedine Zidane says in that creepy new Lionel Messi ad,
some strange alchemy. You need an anchor. You need a dedicated draft
analyst. You need an NBA reporter. You need a former NBA player. And
you need a college guy, someone who focuses on the amateur game,
someone who can tell the NBA die-hards what's what with the credibility
that comes from being paid to watch a lot of college basketball.
For ESPN, these people are Jay Bilas and Dick Vitale. But NBA TV also has rights to the NBA draft, and they need a college analyst of their own. Who wants some freelance work? Who's interesting? Who sniffs out the camera like a yuppie on a Labradoodle?
Never fear, NBA TV. Into that void steps ... Bruce Pearl:
For the first time Tennessee Volunteers men’s basketball head coach Bruce Pearl will join NBA TV’s draft night coverage to provide a unique perspective on the NBA Draft Preview Show ... and the 2009 NBA Draft Recap. In addition, Pearl will provide blogs on NBA.com entitled “Pearl’s Gems” with his insight on the NBA Draft and prospects.
Oh, Bruce. I'm sure you'll be an asset to the NBA TV and NBA.com audiences, but man, we need to talk about this blog name. "Pearl's Gems?" Really? That's the best we can do? The "Someone's Plural Noun" format of blog naming ("Eamonn's Takes," for example) is the only type of blog name more played out than the "add a verb to the front a sports media member's name, giggle" style. (KSK did it well; others uncreatively copied.) And yeah, I get the gems thing, but come on. You're a funny guy, right? Your URL says everything about you! Be creative!
Anyway. Bruce Pearl's media career -- already filled with highlight after highlight -- continues apace. If the man ever loses his job, he's got his future sewed up.
